The Campus Directory includes listings of students, faculty, staff and other information about Texas A&M, Jill;. | I • HU I im kmmmB ’94-95 CAMPUS DIRECTORY • In the fall of 1922, two Aggie Band fish meandered out of Kyle Field after a game, playing a mournful tune. Their goal was to break some sort of jinx that hov ered over A&M at time. One by one others joined in, creating a long line wondering throughout campus. From then on, the Walk occurred regardless of the out come of the game. Their senior year, the Class of ’26 decided to give one last Walk to show their spirit to the school. They were led by two band se niors named J. William Dorsey on the bass horn and Oluf G. Carl son on the piccolo, better known as “Piccolo Red.” The seniors rested their hands on the shoul der of the Aggie in front, walking in a serpentine manner through out the campus. They wore their senior boots, untucked their shirt tail to indicate that they were out of uniform. The men cried as they walked past all the old famil iar places on campus and recalled precious memories. Thus the Class of '26 died and the Ele phant Walk tradition was bom •The record will show that Elephant Walk in the 40s was a most solemn occasion, topped in solemnity only by Silver Taps. Graduating seniors were a proud lot. They had endured a war that took many of their buddies’ lives. There’s a time for everything — hilarity, rejoicing and reflec tion. 1 pray that the new breed will change the course of Ele phant Walk today from a time of rowdiness to one of reflection upon the good times, with good friends and classmates. And that each graduation class would en courage and insist upon a higher standard of conduct. They'll be respected winners rather than noisy graduates if they do so. W. J. "Jay" Poynor, Sr. Class of 47 Tracy Kennedy Vice president Class of ’95 The following are letters by let ters from former students con cerned about the loss of the tradi tional Elephant Walk. •The tradition of Elephant Walk as it exists today is so dras tically changed and far removed from its original form. I would not like seeing it in its present condi tion. I would be glad to see an amicable arrangement made that would permit the expressions of a more dignified and gentlemanly approach to Elephant Walk, and send the seniors off with a more appropriate kind of bon voyage. T. J. Skrabanck Class of ’26 •As far as the history of it goes, I believe that Elephant Walk was started by a group of seniors who realized that school days were about completed and that seniors would soon be facing the “cruel, cruel world.” It was built upon the belief that ele phants, upon reaching maturity, would leave the pleasures and ac tivities of youth and go off into the jungle and pass away. The activity was led by a Texas Aggie Band senior ( a sousaphone player ). Seniors would leave their dormitories and fall into lines behind the sousaphone play er. Their shirt tails would come out, and the participants would form a serpentine line and weave along Military Walk, marching to the doleful sounds of the sousa- phones. Incidentally, I was one of those sousaphone players! I do not know what happened to this • I’d like to share my thoughts on the very old Aggie tradition of “Elephant Walk.” As I guess most real Aggies know, the origi nal meaning of the senior class' Pllephant Walk across campus was to signal the beginning of the end for the old campus leaders as they began their preparation to vanish from the scene (as old ele phants know when it is their time to go off to the historical bone yards of their ancestors), and to turn over their mantle of leader ship to the younger classes. Just as parents have trouble letting their children go off on their own, I recall worrying about whether the junior class at A&M would be capable of “keeping the spirit burning and the traditions alive” after we were gone. I re member it as a very solemn time, and, even though I wanted to graduate, I hated to lose those feelings of belonging and friend ship that I had felt for four years, While Elephant Walk was nev er as solemn as some other tradi tions like Silver Taps or Muster, I cannot believe that today’s Aggies would treat it with any less re spect than they would those cere monies. It should be a time that seniors get to begin the difficult process of letting go and that un- derclasspersons watch with re spect due not just that senior class, but every senior class that has continued Texas A&M’s great traditions since 1876. 1 wish the Fighting Texas Ag gie Classes of ’95 and ’96 the best of luck in successfully restoring this great tradition to the proper conduct that it deserves. If suc cessful in doing so, you will mark your place in A&M history. Mike Marlow Head Yell leader Class of’64 The Battalion encourages letters to the editor and will print as many as space allows.
