Harper Harper’s hard week took an other twist after he left prac tice Wednesday. He borrowed Michael Irvin’s Mercedes Benz and was in a parking lot when he said another vehicle crashed into the car he was driving. The Cowboys said Harper banged his ribs but was OK. Before the mishap, Harper vowed he was ready for the 49ers. Harper said “I’m going to play Sunday regardless of what the doctors say. I was hurt worse against Minnesota last year. My knee didn't swell up as much this time. There is more flexibility.’’ Harper has caught six touchdown passes, a career- high for him during the regu lar season. He got hurt in the 38-10 victory over the New York Giants when he twisted the knee trying to catch a pass. “I’m probably 45 percent and if I can get to 50 percent I'll scare most opponents,” Harper said. "I can at least take some pressure off Irvin." Harper, who wore a tight wrap around his knee on Tues day, has averaged 29 yards per catch against the 49ers in the last three games. In the past, Harper said the 49ers have rolled their cover age to double Irvin. “They challenged me man to man and when they do that we can eat ’em up,” Harper said. “This is one of those games you don’t want to miss,” Harper said. “Number 80 (Harper) has to be in there. 1 can’t leave my partner in crime (Irvin) alone.” Harper said he feared a tom ligament when he fell in a tangle on a Hail Mary pass from Troy Aikman to end the first half. “It scared me half to death,” Harper said. “I was kind of in shock there for a minute. ” Kevin Williams will replace Harper if he can’t play against the 49ers. Rookies Cory Flem ing and Willie Frazier are com peting for a backup spot. “Kevin would do a great job,” Harper said. “He’s a tough cookie. But nobody has to worry. I’ll be in there.” Student [counseling s |ty students lall. (AP) — James Worthy, the last link to the “Showtime” days of the Los Angeles Lakers, will retire Thursday. The team said Wednesday night the retirement of the sev en-time all-star and MVP of the 1988 NBA Finals will be an nounced at an afternoon news conference at the Forum. Worthy, 33, started this sea son on the injured list because of tendinitis in his left knee and wasn’t being counted on by new coach Del Harris as a prominent player. He left the team last month when his mother died in North Carolina and he hasn’t been with the Lakers since. A 6-foot-9 forward whose swooping drives made him one of the game’s most exciting play ers, Worthy helped lead the Lak ers to three NBA championships during the 1980s. His departure signals the breakup of one of basketball’s great acts. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper and Kurt Rambis have all retired. Byron Scott now plays for the In diana Pacers, A.C. Green is with the Phoenix Suns and Pat Riley coaches the Knicks. Worthy played all 12 of his NBA seasons with the Lakers af ter being the No. 1 selection in the 1982 draft out of North Car olina. He averaged 17.6 point! and 5.1 rebounds in 926 careet regular season games. Worthy is retiring as the 54th leading scorer in NBA history with 16,320 points. Last season, he played in 80 games and aver aged 10.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 20 minutes per game — all career lows. Daugl hiding killed 49ers look to break Cowboys six-game winning streak SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Over the last two years, the San Francisco 49ers’ record against the Dallas Cowboys has been a downer: three meetings, two in NFC championship games, and all losses. They’re still hanging in there, bruised egoes and all, and in Sunday’s rematch the 49ers will be trying to reverse their no-win situation and regain the psycho logical edge ‘This lets us know what type of team we 163 yards and two touchdowns in Dallas’ latest win. “I like the way we’re playing but this is the test because Dal las has great personnel all the way around,” 49ers free safety Merton Hanks said. “We all know we have to go through Dallas, sooner or later. We’ll see how it works out.” San Francisco (7-2) has picked itself up since its second straight NFC champi- "We know what's at stake, not only in the standings have,” 49ers and for the playoffs but tackle Steve ■ . . ... . . «• . We’re not just look ing to be at their level.” “It’s a game everybody wants, wants real bad,” added San Francisco linebacker Ken Nor ton Jr., facing his former Dallas team for the first time. Dallas (8-1) enters the game with the league’s best record and a six-game winning streak, the most recent a 38-10 disman tling of the New York Giants on Monday night. The 49ers also are clicking offensively with Steve Young leading the league in passing and the once-bat tered offensive line returning to health. “We know what’s at stake, not only in the standings and for the playoffs but how important it is to this organization. That’s why we were brought in,” added linebacker Gary Plummer, who was signed as a free agent along with Norton, Deion Sanders, Rickey Jackson and Richard Dent as part of San Francisco’s offseason makeover.
