Friday • November 4, * i, " N Local cable system drop KTVT-Cable Channel 11 By Melissa Jacobs The Battalion The new year may bring disappointment to some Bryan-College Station residents when KTVT-Cable Channel 11 is dropped from the local cable system at midnight on Dec. 31. KTVT is an independent station from Dallas and now provides coverage of Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Stars games to Bryan-College Station. Randy Rogers, TCA Cable manager, said Channel 11 provides independent programming. “KTVT provides Dallas news, weather and sports,” he said. “It covers the Dallas sports teams.” Bryan-College Station residents will lose a lot of the coverage of Dallas sports teams they now receive. “The Dallas sports teams will only be covered some what on HSE and we will lose quite a bit of coverage,” Rogers said. Rogers said he is upset about the change. “I like to watch those programs too,” he said. “I think Bryan-College Station residents will be upset and right fully so.” Mark McGoon, a sophomore animal science major from Plano, said he is disappointed. “You can’t go without watching the Rangers,” he said. “It’s disappointing because the Mavericks will be pretty cool to watch this year since they finally have some de cent players.” Rogers said KTVT gained affiliation with CBS and is discontinuing its satellite signal on Dec. 31. Tt wasn’t TCA’s decision to drop KTVT,” he said “With them taking CBS affiliation, they will discontinue whenii fy|; of tlf not their satellite signal and it’s way too far away for us pick up the signal with an antenna.” KTVT gained affiliation with CBS after long Dallas CBS affiliate KDFW-4 decided to switch to in 1995. KTVT will change its programming line-up becomes a CBS affiliate in 1995. As a result changes, the channel will no longer cover Dallas spi teams “It needs to be pointed out that with them goinj CBS, they will not carry those programs anymore am way,” Rogers said. Rogers said the decision about which channel will it place KTVT has not been made. “We are now looking at our options,” he said. “A dec sion will be made by the end of November.” Rogers said the primary basis of the decision is w the federal government requires. “KYLE, a broadcast station, just went on air this week,” he said. “The federal government gives broadcasi stations the right to be carried on cable systems.” Ulman McMullen, general manager of KYLE, saidts has had some indication that KYLE may be chosen tort place KTVT. “The decision will come from TCA Cable,” he said. ‘I is certainly desirable for us to be on the cable system.” McMullen said KYLE provides independent program ming “We air movies, syndicated programs, local program ming and local interview programs,” he said. Rogers said TCA Cable will make a> formal announce ment, and the change will take place on Jan. 1. WASHINGTON (AP) — An 80- million-year-old egg from a Mongo lian desert contains the first embryo ever found of a meat-eating dinosaur and suggests the fierce beast known as “egg thief’ may have been a ten derly caring parent. Mark A. Norell of the American Museum of Natural History said the embryo discovery changes scientific conclusions about an entire species of dinosaurs. A fossil of the dinosaur species was first found at an ancient Gobi Desert nest in 1923. Researchers concluded that the animal died while eating eggs of some other animal and named the dinosaur oviraptor, Latin for “egg seizer” or “egg thief.” With the discovery of the embryo, said Norell, there is evidence that the 1923 find was misinterpreted and oviraptor was given a bum rap. We have shown that the animal actually was protecting or brooding those eggs” and not eating them, Norell said, and that the eggs wert the oviraptor’s own. Jacques Gauthier of the Califor nia Academy of Science said Norell’s research “is a stunning find.” Norell and his team found the di nosaur nest at a Gobi Desert site called Ukhaa Tolgod in Mongolia.
