Page 8 • The Battalion iiiiiiiiiSiiiasi ♦ s ’3^*sv Sports Milwaukee Bucks fall to Houston in preseason game HOUSTON (AP) — Vernon Maxwell hit a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds to play Wednesday night as the Houston Rock ets held off the Milwaukee Bucks for a 119-116 exhibition victory. Maxwell, who hit a number of clutch 3-pointers last season, took a pass on the side with time running down. His shot hit the rim, bounced straight into the air and fell through. The Bucks never led after the first basket of the game but Lee Mayberry scored 39 points and fueled a fourth- quarter rally that caught the defending NBA champions with 25.9 seconds left in the game. A free throw by Arturas Karnishovas tied the game at 116-116 but the Rockets called a timeout and set up the play for Maxwell, who scored 21 points. The Rockets celebrated the return of MVP Hakeem Olajuwon to the lineup. Olajuwon missed the first three days of preseason workouts and did not play in the preseason opener against Philadelphia because of an injury to his left sinus cavity received in a pickup game. He scored 14 points and played most of the game. The Rockets led 68-51 at halftime and were up 91-70 with four minutes to play in the third quarter when the lead started slipping away. The Bucks, playing without unsigned No. 1 draft pick Glenn Robinson, rallied behind the shooting of guard Todd Day, who scored 20 points, and Mayberry. Mario Elie scored 18 points for the Rockets and Vin Baker added 19 for the Bucks. CAN YOU BEAT THE SPREAD? Lost/Found Thursday • October 20,19! Oates new manager for Rangers ARLINGTON (AP) - Job ny Oates knows pitchiii| and defense. It will test his skillsli the limit to teach those attii utes to the power-prom Texas Rangers, his net employers. “I think Texas is very dose!) being a winner,” Oates sait Wednesday after signing a twn year contract for a undisdoad sum. “I know I was certainly in timidated at times by theirol fense. But there is more to base ball than just offense.” Former Baltimore manager Oates didn’t talk rebuilding, either. “Our goal is to win the World Series next year,” said Oates, “There is a great deal of talent here, enough to win.” Oates said he wasn't overly concerned by the poor Texas pitching staff. ‘‘What is important is attitude,” he said. “The better defense you have, the better pitching you will have and the less offense you will need. We can learn to play defense and to pitch. We have a chance to be very good.” Oates replaced Kevin Kennedy, who was fired by new general manager Doug Melvin last week and then beat out Oates for the Boston Red Sox manager’s job. Melvin replaced Tom Grieve, who transformed the Rangers into a power hitting team that was last in the major leagues in defense. The pitching staff had a five runs plus per game average. Winder Confined from Page 7 Texas A&M 40 before pitching to Darryl McGee. McGee takes it to the Aggie 30 where he manages to pitch it back to Sanders as he is hit by Wilbert Biggens. Sanders takes the ball 15 yards before pitch ing it to Bailey who goes another ten yards before being stopped by 12th man Thomas Little. Before hitting the ground, Sanders pitches back to Shelling who has nothing but end zone ahead of him. Just as Shelling is about to step across the goal line, he is blindsided by 50 crazed freshman chasing yell leader Scott Whitaker. I know that Grant Teaff (former longtime Baylor head coach) thought it was one of the defenses he had ever seen at Baylor. “The way that A&M han dled them (Baylor) offensively (will present) a great test for our defense.” Rice has fared well defen sively this season, holding op ponents to just 96 rushing yards a contest. However, op ponents have managed success against the Owls through the air, gaining an average of 174.6 passing yards a game. Hatfield said the team real izes it will encounter quite a challenge when they tangle with the 6th-ranked Aggies this weekend. “We know what we’re going into,” Hatfield said. “You only get a chance to play each game one time in your lifetime. We just have to have our plan good enough and be able to execute it well enough to go over there and win the game.”
