Battalion Advertising let it work for your business call 845-2696 The Battalion • Page 10 Unknown Allen pays dividends IRVING (AP) —When the Dallas Cowboys picked 330- pound Larry Allen in the sec ond round of the NFL draft, two immediate questions came to mind: Who is Allen? Where is Sonoma State? After his successful debut at left offensive tackle on Sunday in a 38-3 victory over Arizona, Allen has shown why the Cowboys scouting combine headed by Larry Lacewell thought so much of him. Allen, blocking most of the day on Clyde Simmons, did n’t allow a sack. Simmons was impressed. “I thought Allen played well,” Simmons said. “It was a tough situation for him. I know when I go up against a young guy like that, he’s go ing to get some help. But Allen held his own.” Allen started because vet eran Mark Tuinei was bedev iled by back spasms. Tuinei was suited up and would have gone into the game if Allen hadn’t performed. Allen said the biggest trouble he had was with quarterback Troy Aik- man’s audibles at the line of scrimmage. “I made a lot of mental mistakes,” Allen said. “I just had trouble with the audibles. Nate Newton told me that was the one thing that would be hard and he was right. I was glad I made it through without getting Troy killed.” Allen admitted he was nervous going against the NFL’s No. 2 rated defense. “I was a little shaky at first,” Allen said. “I just kept, telling myself it was going to be tough. I think I’ll be a lit tle more ready and a little bit better in my next game. I’m not going to be nervous again because I’ve already played against a great player like Simmons.” Allen said he knew he was under the microscope. “I want to prove that somebody from a tiny school can make it in the NFL,” Allen said. Sonoma State is located 45 miles north of San Fran cisco. He played so well for the Cossacks that he was in vited to play in the East- West Shrine game and also the Senior Bowl. Allen was raised on some mean streets in Compton, Calif. “It’s a tough place,” Allen said. His mother, Vera, agreed, “When we would hear gunfire outside our house we would automatically role out of the bed, lay on the floor until the shooting stopped, then get back in bed and go to sleep,” she said. Golf Continued from Page 9 in seasonal sports so they can play an outdoor sport in the warmer months and an indoor sport in the cooler months. All the preparation and practice is to help the pair make it to the next level, the Ladies Professional Golfers Association tour. Edfors un derstands this and was able to help bring Rosberg to A&M for the same reason. “When I came here, my goal wasn’t to be a pro golfer,” Ed fors said. “That quickly changed with the help of coach (Sutherland). I told Is abella if she wanted to go on tour, she needed a good coach (like Sutherland).” Sutherland, who says one or two good players can turn a program around, is looking to do her part, and will go to great distances to prove it. This Jay in A^gie fool hall... October 13, 1917: In a 98-0 defeat of Dallas University, the Aggies post a school record for single game points.
