Dallas stuffs Cardinals, Ryans boast in blowout IRVING (AP)— Buddy Ryan’s seven-game hex on the Dallas Cowboys ended Sunday in a hu miliating rout that had the fans sarcastically chanting “Buddy, Buddy, Buddy” even before the first quarter was over. Emmitt Smith, playing de spite a sore right hamstring, scored twice and Troy Aikman threw two touchdown passes as the Cowboys (4-1) snapped a seven-game losing streak to Ryan with a 38-3 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. It was the Cowboys’ eighth consecutive victory over the Car dinals (1-4), and the 35-point dif ferential tied a 45-10 whipping of St. Louis in 1973 as the largest defeat inflicted by Dallas. Ryan dominated Dallas when he was at Philadelphia and went into the game with an 8-2 record against the Cowboys. But his pregame boast that the Cardi nals would handle the defending world champions looked silly. He gave the booing crowd a big thumbs up before the game started, but his head was hang ing down by halftime. His of fense produced only two first downs, and his second-ranked NFL defense looked dog-tired. Dallas rolled 83 yards in 8 plays on their first possession, aided by four penalties for 44 yards against the over-aggres sive Arizona defense. The payoff came on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Aikman to fullback Daryl Johnston, who beat line backer Seth Joyner in the flat. Then came a succession of er rant throws by Schroeder. Dar ren Woodson picked one off at the Arizona 23. Aikman hit Alvin Harper for 18 yards and Smith scored on a 3-yard run. Larry Brown intercepted a sec ond bad throw and returned it 14 yards to the Arizona 18. Aikman hit Jay Novacek for 13 yards and Smith scored on a 1-yard run. Schroeder hurt his shoulder on the play and was replaced by former Cowboy Steve Beuerlein, who was intercepted by Brown and James Washington. Ryan said before the game his domination of Dallas “wasn’t bragging. I’m just stating facts.” But there was a loser in town Sunday. It was Buddy. October 10, 1964: The Aggies end a four-game road trip to start the season with a loss to future Heismon Trophy winner Mike Garrett and USCy 31-7, in Los Angeles. Passing Continued from page 7 best total in his career, be hind his 272 yards against Houston in 1992. "I think we were fairly successful with our passing game, and I love it, “ Pullig said. “We had to throw the ball for them to respect the pass and open up the run ning game. That’s the most balls I’ve thrown since I was in high school.” The receiving corps was led by senior wide receiver Ryan Mathews, who hauled in six catches for 74 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown in the second quarter that finally got the Aggies on the board, after the Cougars had held A&M scoreless for over 20 minutes. Also catching touchdown passes for A&M Saturday night were senior Chris Sanders, with 3 cutches for 34 yards, and senior running back Wilbert Biggens, who surprised many observers with his pair of catches for 83 yards, including a 65-yard catch and run that gave A&M a commanding 31-0 lead in the fourth quarter, Sanders, who also turned in a big play last week against Texas Tech, continued to im prove in his last season, using his pure athletic ability to haul in his first career receiv ing touchdown. As Pullig scrambled on a third and goal from the UH four-yard line, Sanders caught his quarterback’s eyes and indicated to Pullig to throw it high. “Once 1 saw him start scrambling, I just tried to get open, “ Sanders said. "I’m 6 foot 4 inches, the comerback was just as tall, but I had two hands on it and he only had one. It was like my old ‘LBJ’ style (the high school Sanders played basketball at).” Despite being shut out by the Cougar defense in the first and third quarters, the A&M offense finished with 406 yards of total offense. Senior tailback Rodney Thomas, who contributed 116 of those yards, explained that a rested UH defense had a lot to do with the of fense’s early sluggishness, “Their defense had a couple of weeks to watch film and so forth, and they were well-pre pared, “ Thomas said. “They played with a lot of heart, and you have to commend them on the job they did.” It was easy to see the Ag gies were determined to pass from the beginning of the game, throwing three straight times to open the contest, as the passing at tack made up 65 percent of A&M’s total net yardage. Despite the statistical suc cess of the Aggie offense through the air, head coach R.C. Slocum said the aerial at tack still has problems that the team must work out in order to stay successful this season. “We had several throws and several catches that we should have made tonight, " Slocum said. “ I thought Corey played well at times, did some good things and made some good throws. A couple of time he made some bad throws, but overall he played pretty well.” b< Eml the o; expent momer | night a enterta remem embarr had ha over th “On< the des “Oh, “Hee paper s “Oh his dip] “No, tucked througl could si her in t I am believe skirt.
