To Place Your Ad In The Battalion Call 845-2696 Oilers face turning point Houston's problems difficult to overcome -■fwwm SPORTS HOUSTON (AP) — The Hous ton Oilers have either achieved their formula for a winning sea son or they’ve started a free fall. A 1-4 record last season led to an 11-game winning streak. Don’t count on that happening again. They’re off to another 1-4 start, but all the Oilers’ other nightmares about this season are coming true. Quarterback Cody Carlson is injury-prone as feared; the offen sive line isn’t the same without perennial Pro Bowl guard Mike Munchak; and yes, many of those fans who booed Warren Moon, wish he hadn’t been traded. “It’s real simple at this point,” quarterback Bucky Richardson said. “We can either hang our heads and give up, or we can de cide to fight like hell and keep go ing. I’m going to keep fighting.” The offense and defense no longer blame each other. They’ve realized there are enough problems for everyone. Some players talk in cliches about concentrating harder or finding chemistry but corner- back Cris Dishman puts into words what no one has wanted to admit since the salary cap as saulted the Oilers’ roster. “We just don’t have the tal ent,” Dishman said. “To be hon est with you, that’s it.” “Last year, when we were 1-4, we had bad bounces, this year the ball is bouncing our way and we’re not making the plays. There’s no comparison to this team and last year’s because we don’t have the talent.” The Oilers lost defensive ends William Fuller and Sean Jones to the salary cap and replaced them with Kenny Davidson from Pittsburgh, and Lamar Lathon, a linebacker last season. The defensive line has more sacks after five games than last year’s line, but they’ve become woeful at stopping the run. The defense has allowed three 100- yard rushing performances this year compared to only six over the previous two seasons. The defense ranks No. 1 in the AFC and No. 5 in the NFL in total defense but they are 28th against the run. “We just can’t stop the run,” safety Marcus Robertson said. “If you can’t stop the run, there’s al most no reason to have any defen sive backs. We’ve got to be able to make people pass the ball. “If I’m making a lot of tack les, something is wrong.” The biggest talent drain is in the offensive line. There are three new starters — guards Kevin Donnalley and John Flan nery and left tackle Brad Hop kins. Only center Bruce Matthews and right tackle David Williams are holdovers. They have become a defen sive end’s dream. The line, only two years ago among the most protective of its quarterback, has allowed 23 sacks in five games this season. Carlson is no Moon but he has n’t even had a chance to be Cody Carlson. He suffered a partially separated shoulder in the season opener and has since received a broken nose and has knee and ankle problems. The team first moved in to the top ten last week after winning the Red Raider Open in Lubbock. The number eight ranking came via the Aggies’ first place finish in the northwestern State Invitational in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Men’s tennis travels to Austin A large portion of the 19th- ranked Texas A&M men’s tennis team will hope to serve their national championship hopes this weekend as they travel to Austin to compete in the Pre-Qualifying division of the Men's All-American Championships, the second leg of the Collegiate Grand Slam. The tournament, which will be held at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas campus, will feature players from schools in the Southwest Region including Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. The players will compete for two berths in the qualifying portion of the Men’s All-American. Competing for A&M in the tournament will be team members Bernardo Martinez, Carlos Tori, Robbie Krause, Eduardo Martinez, Eric Horan, Ricardo Rodarte, Brad Holland, Kevan Benkowitz and Satyen. Women’s tennis team hosts invitational The Texas A&M women's tennis team will kick off its home season today as it hosts the Texas A&M 4-Way Invitational, beginning at 8:30 a.m at the Omar Smith Tennis Center. A&M will be up against players from Baylor, LSU and Southwestern Louisiana in the tournament. The Lady Aggies will be without two of their top players, as junior Wilson Pate and sophomore Nancy Dingwall will both sit out of the tournament .The 4-Way will be a flighted tournament, with two singles divisions(denoted as A and B) and one doubles division. Competing in the “A" singles for the Lady Aggies will be senior Christine DiNardo, junior Lonna Logan and freshman Sissy Garvin, while junior Anna Strakosova and sophomores Julie Beahm and .’Michelle Prejean comprise A&M’s “B" contingency. The doubles teams for the Lady Aggies will be Prejean / Strakosova, Carvin / Beahm and DiNardo / Logan. Holstead Continued from page 5 Warren Moon) to lead their teams to the Super Bowl. Even the New York Giants held on the Phil Simms through the 1993 season, hop ing he had one more miracle left in him before switching to the younger Dave Brown. These players are still very talented, but because of the age are just one blindside hit away from retirement. So as the NFL season con tinues, lets hope that some where in the college world is the next Aikman, Montana or Simms. A quarterback who can not only rack up incredi ble statistics (i.e. Marino, El- way and Kelly), but can actu ally win Super Bowls instead of choking at the big game.
