Graduates
Continued from Page 1
"It is not that we are totally differ
ent, but that we as graduate students
had already had the degree and were
one step above the degree,” Merritt
said. “We brought experiences the un
dergraduates could emphasize with but
could not understand because they are
not in our position.”
Kardell said the task force allowed
the two groups to work out their differ
ences in a way that would maintain each
group’s autonomy while still allowing
the groups to work together successfully.
“For months we hashed out the dif
ferent sides and came up with a plan
that would let us both exist and in
crease our communication,” Kardell
said. “This is a positive working solu
tion for both groups.”
Merritt said the task force has al
lowed the two groups to work closely
together.
“The Graduate Student Council got a
bit more money to deal with programs
and issues,” he said. “And the Student
Government got more opportunities and
greater access to deal with the Graduate
Student Council.”
“There are going to be more joint
functions this year than in the past,”
Merritt said. “It is best for A&M that
the two groups continue to work to
gether.”
Kardell said the Graduate Student
Council has many plans for the upcom
ing year including sponsoring a research
poster competition to highlight the grad
uate student community in October.
“We were looking for a way to show
case the graduate community at A&M,”
she said. “This will show the strength of
our community and demonstrate the re
search we have. The director of the Na
tional Science Foundation will give out
awards and other national agencies will
be here.”
Kardell said the council is studying
its graduate enhancement dollars, which
is the amount of money graduate stu
dents pay above the normal tuition rate.
She said graduates pay $20 an
hour more for in-state tuition;
an hour more for out-of state
than undergraduates. The:
works to ensure this extra moE;
to graduates.
“The money should go back
ate programs,” Kardell said. “Iff
ly believe it is a worthwhile fee.’
Kardell said the Graduate!
Council also plans to address isj (
student services fees, child can
and Transitions Orientations pr
for graduate students and stude:
the traditional age.
