But this time-traveling Jean- Claude Van Damme vehicle stands on its own kickboxing feet and launches into a somewhat en tertaining story of past, present and future. In 1994, Max Walker (Van Damme) is a Washington, D.C., police officer madly in love with both his job and his wife, Melissa (Mia Sara of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’). Walker has just been offered a job with the Time Enforcement Commission, a newly created gov ernment agency designed to police the use of secret time-travel tech nology and destroy those who would abuse it. After Melissa is killed and Walker badly injured by unknown heavy metal-assailants, the movie leaps 10 years forward to a future where to day’s problems are compounded by fear of criminal time travelers altering the past to change the present. Walker, now a hardened workaholic TEC agent, discovers massive corruption in the agency and the government while on an assignment to capture his rogue ex-partner on 1929 Wall Street. Sen. Aaron McComb (Ron Sil ver) is a ruthless presidential can didate who readily employs time travel to go back in the past and use his knowledge of the “future” to make money for his political campaigns. Walker and McComb each quickly realize the threat posed by the other, and the war is on. “Timecop” combines action, mystery and science fiction into a reasonably well-thought out story. The plot makes sense and does not tax the actors beyond* limited abilities. The future sequences ar- istic enough to let audieraj lieve what the future may:j and Van Damme typical]; off his impressive gymnast]]] ing prowess.
