New building to provide advantages By Lisa Messer The Battalion The upcoming move of the College of Business from the Blocker Building to the newly built Wehner Building on West Campus will provide business students and faculty with mod ern facilities and equipment and more space. Dr. Benton Cocanougher, dean of business administra tion, said the Wehner Building will be open in time for spring semester classes. “Most of the moving will be done over the semester break,” Cocanougher said. “A few non- departmental entities will be moving at the beginning of De cember, but most of the college will move at the end of the se mester or over the break.” Dr. Dean Wichem, associate dean of business administra tion, said the classroom facili ties in the Wehner Building will be more technologically ad vanced than the facilities in Blocker. Podiums at the front of each classroom will give instructors control of extensive audio-visu al systems, including computer generated displays. Cocanougher said the class rooms are well-designed for all multimedia uses. “The classrooms are state of the art,” Cocanougher said. “They will all have audio-visual capabilities. They’re really first class.” Many of the classrooms will be case-style, on tiers, where the instructor will be able to walk down the middle of the room. Faculty members will benefit lipiii s from the relocation because of the improved computing infra structure, which will give them better computing links at their desktop computers. Julie Gilliam, a member of the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi, said student organi zations will also benefit from the relocation. “It will be more organized,” Gilliam said. “Instead of boards to publicize on, we’ll have cubicles, like in the Koldus Building.” Mary Frontiera, president of the business student council, said the new building will be an advantage to both students and the College of Business. “The atmosphere will be dif ferent,” Frontiera said. “The organizations will be more to gether. You’ll be able to talk to people, instead of just looking m ^"" The newly built Wehner Building is finished and ready to accept its new occupant, the College ofBi ART National Professional Business Fraternity presents: FALL RUSH ‘94 Informational Rush Monday, Sept. 12th John J. It’s a great opportunity for the Col lege of Business.” Cocanougher said one of the main reasons for moving the College of Business is the lack of space in the Blocker Build ing. A&M currently has the sec ond largest undergraduate business program in the nation, and the College of Business has almost doubled in student en rollment since moving into Blocker in 1980. The College of Business will be the sole occupant of the four- story, 190,000-square-foot Wehner Building. The relocation will nop provide more room forbusii classes, organizations anil tivities, but will also relievtl overcrowding in Blocker. Glenn Dowling, directai A&M's planning and i tional analysis, said the for Academic Enhancemejl the departments of Enfl speech communication, tl arts, philosophy and ties and statistics will more space in the building Dowling said the deans the College of Science, the ge of Liberal Arts and the partment of Agricultural I nomics will move into building. Part of the math departr will also move intothek ing, but they will retaintl current space in the Mil Building.
