Place Your Ad In The Battalion Call 845-2696 Tuesday • September 6, Defaults Continued from Page 1 “We want students to pay their federal loans because it di rectly affects our ability to dis burse funds,” Falks said. When schools have a loan de fault rate of 25 percent or high er for three years, they risk los ing eligibility to participate in the government’s primary loan program, the Federal Family Education Loan Program. A&M’s default rate has hovered around five percent for several years. “We aren’t too concerned about losing our eligibility, but we want to keep our default rate as low as possible,” Falks said. In 1992, FFELP allowed un subsidized loans, loans that re quire interest payments by the student instead of the govern ment, to be disbursed to stu dents not qualifying for subsi dized loans. This action in creased the loan volume at A&M by 45 percent, Falks said. “We don’t anticipate an in crease in our default rate due to the unsubsidized loans, but that is yet to be seen,” Falks said. “It could go up, but A&M stu dents have always been very re sponsible about their loan pay ments. They make good money when they leave here.” Students who don’t repay their loans can expect their wages to be garnished andlhej credit history to be severelya|, fected. “The thing about federalstu dent loans that most peopl don’t realize is they affect you credit for the rest of yourli[ ( Falks said. “Even if you declai bankruptcy, the default can'll removed from your creditrt port. These loans mustl payed back.” Jerry Gastoi executive associate provost, sai he was aware of the figures an thought the numbers wereii dicative of the caliber of sti dents that attend A&M. “The students at A&M let to take their responsibilitii very seriously,’ Gaston said, It doesn’t surprise me at alloi numbers are so low.” Ross Continued from Page 2 policies for residence halls. Also, because of complaints from students about noisy Bonfire wake-up calls, this year the resi dents of every hall will vote to decide the kind of Bonfire wake-up call they want. Ross said there are many ways students can get involved with RHA. Every person living on-campus is automatically a member of RHA. Students wanting to become more involved can join their individual hall coun cils. RHA also has committees that students can join, he said. Ross said it is through these committees that RHA can accomplish its goals. He said all aspects of student life, from social activities to University policies to leadership de velopment, are reflected through the RHA commit tees. Ross said the residence halls have a major so cial impact on most students. “I made my best friends through my resideu hall,” he said. “Students should get involved their hall councils for social reasons.” Ross, a member of the Class of '95, is an inti national studies and political science major frt Henderson, Texas. He became involved in RHA and Walton Hi Council his freshman year. “I fell in love with the whole on-campus livi: experience,” he said. “I wanted to be a part what happened, so 1 ran for officer positions oni hall council. He was Walton Hall's secretary duringl sophomore year and its RHA delegate and soc: chair his junior year. He was the chair of theRH Programs Committee his junior year. Trent Ashby, senior yell leader, is Ross’s roo: mate and has known him since their freshi® | year in high school. Ashby said Ross has afe I been a leader. “He is very spirited,” Ashby said. “Owen I dedicated to his work, and he really wantsi make a difference for A&M and especially! RHA.” Poll says U.S. distrusts Congress Trust rating down 10 percent since start of sessioi NEW YORK (AP) — Only 14 percent of Americans give Con gress a high trust rating in an Associated Press poll taken as members began a recess that for many marks the beginning of their fall re-election cam paigns. Two percent trust Congress to do what is right just about always, and an additional 12 percent trust lawmakers most of the time — a trust rating down 10 points from the begin ning of the current Congress. Five percent said they al most always trust President Clinton to do what is right, and 25 percent mostly trust him. That totals 30 percent, down from 52 percent the week after his inauguration and 40 per cent six months into his term.
