Sgt. Maj. Tom Epting, a mil itary science instructor at A&M, said the immediate at tention Smith received from his instructor, friends at the complex, the University Police Department, the Emergency Medical Technicians and the doctors at the medical center probably saved Smith’s life. “Right after the accident, the cadets there reacted immediate ly by calling the EMTs,” Epting said. “The doctor was able to get in communication with Ja son’s parents before he went into surgery. All involved re sponded in a timely manner. It was a real heads-up reaction.” Epting explained the situa tion to other cadets at a re cruiting meeting that night. "I explained it at the end of the meeting so I could conduct an orderly meeting without people leaving," Epting said. "I knew what the reaction would be.” Cadet Malcolm Hester stepped forward and suggested that all the cadets pray for Smith. Hester led them in the prayer. Epting said that of the 50 people in attendance that night, at least 30 showed up at the hospital. “It was really great to see everybody united like that,” Epting said. “It’s good to be an Aggie.” When Smith awakened after the surgery, he gave the Aggie thumbs up and asked to hear the Aggie War Hymn. Smith said his involvement at A&M was incentive to recov er quickly. “I still can’t ride horseback yet,” Smith said. “I want to con vince them to let me ride so I can lead my platoon during home football game march-ins.” Smith said he intends to be able to ride by Sept. 10, the date A&M plays the University of Oklahoma, in A&M’s first game at Kyle Field. “I think I can do it really easily,” Smith said. “I’m doing a lot better.” Tim Barba, executive officer of Company G-2, said Smith is doing great. “He’s made leaps and bounds in recovering since the accident happened,” Barba said. Smith said he wants to thank all the people who have been friends to him and who have prayed for him. "There’s a book that every one was asked to write their name in when they visited me,” Smith said. ‘T’d like to see it so I can know who to thank. “I have a lot of good friends,” he said. “I know they’ve been a big help to me in my recovery. I’m so pleased to be back at A&M and in the Corps. I’m back in my boots.” AGGIE MEN’S CLUB Aggie Men’s Club Selections 1994 Date Time Place Dress 9/1 7:00-9:00 pm Clayton Williams Alumni Center Coat & Tie 9/3 2:00-4:00 pm Olsen Field Pavillion Casual Dress 9/5 8:00-11:00 pm Kyle Field Press Box Nice Dress 9/6 7:00-10:00 pm Alfred T. Other plaintiffs are two attorneys from the RTC’s Denver office and an asset manager in Valley Forge, Pa. Dallas attorney Juan Luis Burgos-Gandia is on admin istrative leave while agency officials review their deci sion to fire him. Burgos- Gandia contends the RTC retaliated against him when he tried to alert officials to the fact that a law firm was over-billing the government by charging $1,000 an hour for S&L cleanup work. Others are contemplating joining the lawsuit, includ ing L. Jean Lewis, the Kansas City investigator who prepared criminal refer rals on a failed Arkansas savings and loan that men tioned FYesident Clinton, “I have talked to the Gov ernment Accountability Pro ject, and we are giving con-1 sideration to joining their I lawsuit,” said Michael For- shey, Lewis’ attorney. “We have not made a final deci sion yet.” ‘‘Ultimately, we antici pate having as many as 10 people in this suit,” said Jeff Ruch, executive director of the Government Account I ability Project, a whistle | blower protection group. The lawsuit, filed Thurs f day in U.S. District Court I for the District of Columbia, alleges that the RTC sytem [ atically has targeted for re taliation employees who I have testified before Con [ gress, cooperated with Gen eral Accounting Office probes, or tried to aleijhif agency's inspector genem misconduct, waste, fraud and abuse. The suit seeks an imme- 1 diate injunction to end fur ther harassment, and asks that personnel records be corrected, back pay issued and the plaintiffs reinstated to their former posts. It also i requests a court hearing within 20 days. The lawsuit is another! public relations debacle fori the S&L cleanup agency,! which has been under in ! tense scrutiny in recent I months for leaks involving! the investigation of Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan Association — the Arkansas i thrift at the center of the f Whitewater affair — and other matters. “We’re aware of the law suit, but we have not seen it and we cannot comment specifically,” said RTC spokeswoman Felicia Neuringer. "This is like a RICO suit, except with the RTC, that stands for Retaliation-Influ enced Corrupt Organize tion,” said Bruce Pederson, a senior RTC attorney in Den ver who has twice testified about agency problems be fore the Senate Banking Committee. “It’s a bureau-1 cratic Mafia.” RICO, the Racketeer In-1 fluenced and Corrupt Orga nization Act, was originally! intended as a legal weapon against mobsters and has been used by prosecutors in! a number of financial cases! in recent years. Within the past year, documents obtained by The | Associated Press show, high-ranking RTC officials in Washington authorized a search of Pederson’s office computer — a move he al leges violated his privacy rights. Another plaintiff, Denver attorney Jacqueline Taylor, has been stripped of her man agement duties and ordered by the agency’s top attorney not to talk to news reporters about agency issues. Richard Dunn, the asset manager, alleges that after he reported overcharges by independent contractors working for the agency, he was fired and placed under surveillance by detectives hired by the RTC.
