Especially the time you were able to negotiate a truce between the Derrick the Bully and the Robinson twins back in the 4th grade. An excellent piece of work, Mr. Winder.” (If I keep buttering him up like this, he’ll give everything to us and leave the owners high and dry.) “Thank you very much, you know that was a lot harder than it looked. Derrick just wouldn’t budge on his ear thumping agenda.” (If he keeps trying to butter me up like this, Fm going to give everything to the owners and leave the players high and dry.) “Which is why we called you here, David. We just don’t think the owners are going to budge.” (A lot of the players are starting to gripe because they haven’t seen a paycheck since early July.) “David, we owners may look like multi-millionaires on paper, but we are actually as poor as the common man. We don’t make large profits. In fact, most of us don’t even break even. That’s why we need a salary cap so we can institute revenue sharing throughout the league.” (David, we know this whole thing is our fault, but you have got Please see Winder/Page 8 Play in Cotton Bowl could show what is to come By Stewart Doreen The Battalion Two seasons, two Cotton Bowl ap pearances. Since becoming a starter, his record is 17-3. Reading those kind of quarterbacking credentials, one would tend to think Corey Fkdlig is on his way to being mentioned among the all-time A&M greats. But as he enters his junior year, Pullig is still looking to prove himself, while his coaches are praising his accomplishments and his work ethic for the season ahead. “I think he’s not gotten the credit he deserves at this point for what he’s done, ” head coach R.C. Slocum said. “Last year, as a sophomore, he led us to a 10-win season, an undefeated record in the conference and he had a good performance in the Cotton Bowl. Right now, he’s had a heck of a career already at Texas A&M, and he’s only halfway through it, and that’s exciting.” Slocum’s enthusiasm is shared by the Aggies’ new offensive coordinator, Steve Ensminger. Ensminger, formerly the offensive coordinator and quarter back coach at the University of Georgia, is new to the A&M scene, but is quick to credit Pullig for picking up the sys tem. “He has a strong arm, is very intelli gent, is getting really good at reading defenses and right now, he’s throwing the ball where he ought to be throwing it,” Ensminger said. “He has enough talent to do whatever he wants to do. The worst thing he can do is not set his goals high enough. I think he can be an outstanding quarterback at this level.” Pullig hopes he can fulfill the leader ship needs that have been left behind by the graduating seniors. He brings with him the experience that comes with two Cotton Bowl appearances, the first of which, he admits, he was not ready for. “Back then, I thought I was ready, “Pullig said. “A lot of the offensive line men took me in and nursed me along when I was wet behind the ears. The team is now looking to me as a leader because I’ve got more experience than some of the other guys da.’Vr . Taylor served as an assistant coach at the University of Arizona last season after graduating from Stanford University in 1993. In her four year career as a guard with the Stanford Cardi nals, Taylor’s teams won two na tional championships and ap peared in the Final Four three times, while winning four straight Pac-10 conference titles. Taylor made the Cardinal squad as a walk-on in her fresh man year and proceeded to earn a scholarship and the title of Best Defensive Player three years in a row. During Taylor’s time at Stan ford, the team compiled a 114-16 record. Head women’s basketball coach Candi Harvey said Taylor’s knowl edge of both the coaching and playing aspects of the game will make her a valuable member of the Lady Aggies’ staff. “Angela represents the bright future of women’s basketball, "Harvey said. “She has had the opportunity to get invaluable ex perience as a coach and has had great experiences as a player. She will no doubt be a great addition to our staff.” Lr<' V \ v .V: •’ Stew Milne/THE Battalion "Junior starting quarterback Corey Pullig gets ready for the upcoming season dur ing A&M fall practice. — — - Aggie Fact In the last five NFL drafts, Texas A&M leads the Southwest Conference with 32 players drafted.
