EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Ne braska, which ended last season with a heartbreaking loss in the Orange Bowl, started this season with an impressive vic tory in the Kickoff Classic. Tommie Frazier ran for three touch downs and passed for one and Lawrence Phillips rushed for 126 yards as the fourth- ranked Cornhuskers routed No. 24 West Virginia 31-0 Sunday in the opening game of college football’s 125th season. Both teams went 11-0 last year before losing their bowl games. Nebraska missed a last-second field goal and fell to Florida State 18-16 in a national title showdown in the Orange Bowl. West Virginia was clob bered by Florida 41-7 in the Sugar Bowl. The way the Cornhuskers played Sun day, they appear capable of reaching anoth er championship game this season. West Virginia didn’t cross midfield until it recovered a fumble early in the fourth quarter and was shut out for the first time since a 19-0 loss to Penn State in 1986. Nebraska gained 285 yards and 17 first downs in the first half while holding West Virginia to four yards and two first downs. For the game, the Cornhuskers out- gained the Mountaineers 468-89, including 368-8 on the ground. Frazier, a junior who has directed Ne braska’s option attack since midway through his freshman season, helped the Cornhuskers take command in the second quarter after going ahead 3-0 on Tom Siel- er’s 32-yard field goal in the opening period. Frazier scored on runs of 25 and 27 yards and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Baul to give Nebraska a 24-0 halftime lead. He added a 42-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Frazier, the game’s most valuable play er, ran 12 times for 130 yards and was 8- of-16 for 100 yards. Phillips, a sophomore making his first college start, carried 24 times and more than filled the gap left by the departure of star tailback Calvin Jones. West Virginia, which averaged 34 points last season, could do nothing against Nebraska’s quick, aggressive de fense. Sophomores Chad Johnston and Eric Boykin alternated at quarterback for the Mountaineers, but neither could move the team against a Nebraska defense that had eight sacks. On RISfARCH TOENAIL FUNGUS? Stowers has NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball players and owners spent the weekend waiting for each other to call. “There’s nothing going on,” executive council chairman Bud Selig said Sunday by telephone from Milwaukee. Negotiations broke off Thurs day and no further talks are scheduled to end the walkout | that began Aug. 12. The strike canceled 14 more games Sun- I day, raising the total to 223. ■ “I’ve had no contact with any one,” union head Donald Fehr said. Both sides say they expect to hear Monday from federal medi ators, who entered the dispute the day after it began. The medi ators probably will call another bargaining session for the mid dle of the week. Management negotiator Richard Ravitch said last Thurs day he expects the delegations i from each side will be smaller at future sessions. There were 55 people in the room during Wednesday’s meeting — the first since the strike began. “That was a guess on my part,” he said. “I haven’t changed my guess.” No progress is forseen in the talks until at least after the owners’ quarterly meetings, scheduled for Detroit from Sept. 7-9. While there have been ru mors that the meetings will be called off, Selig said that’s not true. “At this point in time, I would think they would take place,” he said Sunday. “Everything is sub ject to review.” Four years ago, the quarterly session in Dallas during the owners’ 32-lockout was canceled to allow negotiations to contin ue. In 1981, a meeting in Kansas City, Mo., was called off — some say to prevent some owners from expressing dissent. Selig said he wouldn’t want the meetings to interfere with bargaining. STRIKE SCOREBOARD No talks are scheduled between players and owners, but both sides anticipate a meeting later this week. Through Sunday, nearly 10 percent of the season has been canceled because of the strike.
