She got too damn deep. “I’m not aware of too many things, I know what I know if you know what I mean,” Brickell sang in 1988 on her and band New Bohemians’ biggest hit, “What I Am.” Now with the release of “Picture Perfect Morning,” Brickell doesn’t seem to know quite who she is on her solo debut, singing a set of mostly subdued and odd R&B record ings and sounding very much Monday August 29,15 f mm Monday • Aug By Robert T. Clark The Battalion Prince "Come" R&B/Rock Warner Bros. Records **1/2 (out of five) “My name is Prince” - “My Name is Prince,” 1992 "My name is - no one” - "Solo,” 1994 - 'V out of her depth. Once upon a time, Brickell climbed onto a stage impro vising lyrics with a band called New Bohemians in a Dallas nightclub. She turned it on, and soon tuned out with the band after signing a Please see Brickell, Page 8C OK, so he wears see-through pants and changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol. No one ever said Prince was normal. But what makes him weird is also what makes him one of the most innovative musicians in history. His eccentricity breeds creativity, and there’s no one more creative than His Royal Badness. “Come” marks the first album released since his name change to the combination of male and female symbols. Printed along side the old name Prince on the album are the years 1958-1993, meaning the name essentially died last year, and only his con tract requires him to still use it. Meanwhile, the August issue of VIBE magazine reports Prince plans on releasing another al bum under his symbol name. To avoid calling him “The artist for merly known as Prince,” we’ll still call him Prince. Prince continues his oh-so- subtle outlook on sex with “Come.” Most of the album is a sort of simulated seduction of some mystery woman, climaxing (literally), with the last song, “Orgasm.” But Prince has covered this territory so many times before. “Space” and “Dark” are simply new versions of past songs “In ternational Lover” and “Adore.” Most disturbing is “Loose!,” where Prince dives into the mo notonously annoying world of techno music. Prince has always been a musical innovator, and hearing him follow techno just doesn’t work. But the album is not a total loss. The first single, '‘Letitgo)” is pure funk, and marks his first musical response to his critics for his eccentric behavior. And Prince’s creativity finally comes through on the album’s j best song “Papa.” Backed by a bluesy old-school groove, Prince I tells the disturbing tale of an j abusive father who beats his young child and locks him in the | closet. The father then kills himself, to which Prince replies j “Don’t abuse children, or else , they turn out like me.” Quite | possibly this could be semi-auto- 1 biographical, as the abusive fa- j ther character is similar to Prince’s father in the 1984 movie hit “Purple Rain.” But Prince’s past ultimately dooms his efforts today. It’s the “Oh, I like Prince’s old music but not the new stuff,” syndrome. It’s difficult to think he will ever be able to top masterpiece al bums like “1999,” “Purple Rain,” and “Sign O’ the Times.” And while “Letitgo” and “Papa” prove there is still no body funkier than Prince, “Come” just doesn’t come through for Prince.
