Dr. Martin A. Weinstock of Brown Univer sity reports in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology this month that there are between 900,000 and 1.2 million new cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer a year in the United States. “We see no evidence that the skin cancer epidemic has peaked,” Weinstock said in a statement released Monday. “Skin cancer now appears to be as common as all other types of cancer combined.” The study was based on data gathered by the National Cancer Institute, the Canadian province of British Columbia, and the Kaiser- Permanente Health Maintenance Organization of Portland, Ore. Nonmelanoma skin cancer is seldom fatal and is usually treated on an outpatient basis. The study said that about one in every three Caucasian children born this year will eventually develop basal cell carcinoma, one type of nonmelanoma skin cancer, and about one in nine will develop squamous cell carci noma. Malignant melanoma is the more often lethal of the skin cancers but is also less com mon than most other forms of skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology esti mated that about 32,000 Americans will be diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1994. The academy estimated that about 7,000 will die of malignant melanoma in 1994 and 2,000 will die of other forms of skin cancer. Skin cancer is generally associated with damage caused by excess exposure to the sun. Light-colored skin is the most susceptible. iol, 93 No. L Paraguay protest paralyzes businesses, pulls out police The Associated Press ASUNCION, Paraguay — Pro- te;sters and police battled in Paraguay’s first general strike in 35 years Monday. One person was killed and at least three were in jured. Though government offices were open, businesses were para lyzed by the strike, which was or ganized by the nation’s three lead ing labor federations. Farmer Sebastian Larrosa, 18, died after being shot in the head while scuffling with police in the town of Tacuara, 145 miles north of Asuncion, police said. National Police spokesman Pe dro Villar confirmed Larrosa’s death but did not say whether he was shot by police. Villar said some police officers were injured by bullets, but gave no details. Journalist Mariano Godoy of the newspaper ABC Color was shot in the hip, and two unidentified farmers were wounded, said Celso Aguilera, a journalist from the dai ly Noticias-El Diario who was cov ering the Tacuara protest. Aguilera said about 2,000 farmers were blocking a highway when police ran toward them. “This repression, it’s evident, was planned,” said Alan Flores, general secretary of the Central Workers Unit, one of the three main labor groups. “For these people (the government) it’s diffi cult to deal reasonably with soci ety. They want a fearful society.” In Ciudad del Este, 205 miles east of Asuncion, police used truncheons to beat protesters blocking a road. Newspaper and television journalists said tney also were beaten by police.
