Midwife convicted of injury to child 'he Associated Press WACO — A McLennan County jury convicted nidwife Julia Pirie on Wednesday of injury to a hild, concluding that she acted recklessly in not Jeeking prompt medical treatment for a baby she |elped deliver. The jury deliberated about 1 3 hours before de- lermining that Pirie was reckless in the death of Hilary Watson. The baby died in December 1992 after contract- ng an infection. Doctors testified that the infant was infected be- ause Pirie did not deliver her until 35 hours after ler mother’s water broke. Prosecutors and defense attorneys later worked ait a settlement, under which Judge George Allen entenced Pirie to four years probation and ordered let not to practice midwifery during that time. I Pirie, wno has delivered at least four other babies who have died in the past year, also had to surren der her midwife registration with the Texas Depart ment of Health. Pirie, 36, of Lott agreed not to appeal her third- degree felony conviction. Prosecutors agreed not to pursue other potential charges. “Our goal was for her to stop being reckless,” prosecutor Susan Kelly said. “I had never intended for this woman to go be hind bars,” she said. “This was a guilt case, and we would have asked the jury to give her probation.” Many of Pirie’s supporters cried and hugged each other outside the courtroom after the verdict. They said several pregnant women were upset because they were counting on Pirie to deliver their babies. Pirie wouldn’t comment after the trial. r, Aggielife editor Aggielife editor G, Sports editor HISON, Photo editor \ Special Sections ediloi ames Bernsen, Angela Ne»e Wasson Birch, Amy Browning, R tia Zavalela ret Kristine Ramirez anny Magee, Melissa Megt* erardo Quezada erkins 1 fall and spring semeslw^ I exam periods), alTexas**® Iding, Texas A&M UnW*' ■sity in the Division of Sir*' 3 Reed McDonald 81 y The Battalion.
