Let Brazosport College make that difference for you. *=) “As the college grew,” Ger- ling said, “they put up what was known as the actual sta tion.” Schultz said the process of bringing a historical marker to the site started about 1 2 months ago and involved a great deal of time and research. “The local commission looks over the application and then sends it to Austin,” he said. “If they approve it, the landowner then has to pay for the marker.” The price for the marker is set by a firm in San Antonio, which has a contract for the foundry work. Halter said a drawing of the depot, sketched several years ago, has helped to pay for local historical markers. “Jim Gaston drew a sketch based on old photographs of the station. Halter said. “The city made reproductions of the drawing to sell and the funds went to pay ing for historic preservation.” The original drawing is lo cated in the city’s library. Halter said he is excited about the dedication of the marker for the train depot be cause the recognition of its his torical importance is long over due. “This is the sixth historical marker in the city, and it proba bly should have been the first,” he said.
