With the score 1-1 in the top of the ninth, A&M head coach Mark Johnson moved Chad Allen from right field to the pitching mound, inserted Tom Bucnman as catcher and placed David Minor in right field. Buchman helped Allen out of a jam, but the Minor move was the one that propelled the Aggies (26- 16) over the Roadrunners (26-15). Lee Fedora led off the ninth with a sharp grounder to left field. Then Johnson ordered Minor to sacrifice bunt. Fedora, then, moved to second on a wild pitch. Minor, a self described role play er, failed to bunt, fouling off his first two attempts. So Johnson gave him permission to take a swing. The permission paid off for the Ag gies as Minor drilled a bouncer over third base to drive in the win- Mary Macmanus/ZVip Battalion A&M first baseman Brian Bittiker (right) tries to tag out University of Texas-San Antonio centerfielder Mickey Perez at first base. When I didn’t put down the the second one I didn’t want to look down to third base and look at the coach’s face. So when he said, ‘Ok hit it, knock it in on your own,’ it felt good knowing that everything wasn’t riding on that one pitch.” But Minor said he enjoyed the outcome being the last pitch of theevening. Johnson agreed. “I got on him about it,” Johnson said. “He made up for it, so he kepthimself out of the dog house.” See Baseball/Page 6 A&M men’s tennis takes Texas Tech, 6-1 From Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M men’s tennis team beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders 6-1 Tuesday, keeping alive the Aggies’ hopes for tneir first- ever Southwest Conference cham pionship. After clinching the doubles point against Tech, A&M struggled during the singles portion of the match. A&M’s Mark Weaver defeat ed Tech’s Juan Gutierrez, 6-3,6-1, but four of the remaining five sin gles matches went to three sets. A&M won four of those contests. Head coach David Kent said the Aggies cut it close on the Red Raiders. “We could have lost this one as easily as we won it,” Kent said. “Texas Tech is a vastly improved team, and they were in the match until the very end. I was proud of the way we hung in there and bat tled when things were not. going well for us. I think Texas Tech will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.” The No. 25 Aggies improved to 19-2 (4-1 in SWC) and will play the No. 5 Texas Christian Horned Frogs in A&M’s last home match of the season on Thursday. Kent said the Horned Frogs should be worried. “We did what we had to do to give ourselves a chance at the con ference title,” Kent said. “Now we have to get ready for Texas Christ ian, but the pressure is all on them. They have everything to lose and we have everything to gain. I think we match up pretty well with them. All we wanted was a chance to compete for the ti tle, and we’ll have that chance on Thursday.” Kevin \\yH'he Battalion Lady Aggie catcher Beth Gerken (3) slides into second base on an at tempted force out during the first game of A&M's doulbeheader against Southwest Texas State. In the first game, Bunting shut down the Bobcats, limiting them to five hits in the 2-0 victory. Bunting walked only one while striking out seven in the shutout, her fiftn of the season. In the bottom of the sixth, the Aggies (44-16) broke open a scoreless game taking advantage of a Bobcat error.
