The teams of Burton- Durham/Strakasova and Beahm/Logan give the Aggies depth at the No. 2 and 3 spots. The Aggies will start a seven- match home stand on Thursday when they host the Baylor Bears. The Olympic silver medalist broke down several times while talk ing to Jane Pauley on the NBC-TV program "Dateline NBC."\ "I'm not somebody who has a script," Kerrigan said. "I talk and feel what's in my heart and in my head. "It's not fair that they put me up on that pedestal because I didn't want to be there and I don't under stand why the same people that put me there want to take me down so fast." Talking about the intrusions in her life, she said she sometimes wished she had stopped skating when she was 10 years old. Kerrigan apologized for any ac tions that might have besmirched her image. She aid she complained aboc wearing her medal during a Dm World parade because "1 was taugli by my coach, if you wear it around people will think you're bragging." "I'm an athlete. Davis and his staff had wined and dined Syracuse transfer Tony Scott and his illegal player agent, Rob Johnson, successfully luring Scott to A&M. Ironically, Scott later blew the whistle on Davis. Davis and an assistant coach were forced to submit resigna tions, but Barone was the one left holding the deflated program. The coach would be limited to seven scholarship players for his first two seasons, the program would suffer the elimination of all-expense recruiting visits for one year, and the '92-93 season would he bereft of post-season tournaments and live television broadcasts. Barone also had four verbal commitments from players when the sanctions were handed down and was forced to cut loose two of his recruits. But the cruelest cut of all may have been the Texas Higher Edu cation Board denying A&M's plans for the construction of a new special events center, which had helped draw Ilarone to A&M. The 14,500-seat arena was supposed to open for this season and replace decrepit G. Rollie White Coliseum, which houses - when full - 7,800. G. Rollie was renovated with new seating, lighting and a new floor, hut again Barone had to settle for second-best, if that, in his own arena. The bottom line, however, was that Barone was ultimately responsible to go out and win games. He had to win with a team of seven scholarship and six walk-on players. Barone's first season was dreadful. After the team's top scorer Brooks Thompson trans ferred to Oklahoma State and top rebounder Shed rick Anderson was suspended by Barone, the team went 6-22, A&M's worst record in 35 years. Last season, Barone's team went i 0-1 7 and, at times, ex celled under pressure. While A&M was only four games better in the win column from the pre vious season, the Aggies showed flashes of character by nearly beating teams with an iron-man starting unit that fought through fatigue to off-set the thin bench of walk-on players. A&M surprised opponents on the enemy home courts, nearly posting wins over the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, New Mex ico, Alabama, Southern Methodist and Texas. But the big story on the road came when A&M denied Rice a share of the Southwest Confer ence championship in the final game of the season. At home nothing could have been finer than blowing out a team's arch-rival in front of a rowdy crowd, and that's just what A&M did as they torched the Texas Longhorns 77-57 in front of 3,704 at G. Rollie. This season Barone and the team have worked for the first time sanction-free. Six new re- Te Th. used 1 is on< thou j claim ly w schoc many ue. T1 cruits have pushed A&M up to full scholarship level, and the emergence of Joe Wilbert lias given the team a major inside threat, with the exceptions of the last two losses r A&M won seven games more than the team did last year. Gen erally however, A&M has had.’ weaker conference to con tty with than last year with oneev' ception. Texas. A&M again beat a Longhorn team at home that was touted as better-talented and more physi cal. It boiled down to free throw shooting: UT's B.J. Tyler missed his; A&M's David Edwards made his. Unforeseen losses to SMU, Baylor and Tech have cost A&M the SWC crown, but there are two things left for the team to ac complish after the 1993-94 regu lar season. Win the SWC. tournament, and roll some heads in the NCA.A tournament. Stranger things have hap pened.
