Perhaps there should be. Looking past the three con secutive let downs that have dropped A&M from the Southwest Con ference championship race, A&M's program has dramati cally turned around since A&M head basketball coach Tony Barone's 6-22 inaugural season in 1991-92. The team is 17-9, although it's uncertain which direction A&M is going. But we do know where they have been. The pain that is learning has burned the basketball team during Barone's tenure in Ag- gieland, as he has rebuilt from the ashes that were handed to him. Barone entered the A&M program only to find himself beset by pressure and obstacles that would test any coach's ability and dedication. And, perhaps, sanity. Barone stepped in to be rudely greeted by two years' worth of NCAA sanctions which were generously left See Barone/ Page 8 A&M women's tennis strives for recognition By Stewart Doreen T 1 : I ' 5 RogerHsieh/THE B.\ ttauon Nancy Dingwall serves dur ing the Lady Aggies match against SMU Mustangs. The Battalion Ihe Texas A&M women's termis team expects to rise to the top of the conference despite an early season injury and the youth of the team. "We're one of the favorites in the conference along with Texas," said Head Coach Bobby Klei- necke. "As long as we keep working and keep improving good things are in the future for us." The Aggies, who are 6-2 in the spring season, will look to senior Janine Burton-Durham to take the reigns as the No.l player for the second straight year. Despite being the only senior in the starting line-up, the team's abilities doesn't re quire much leadership on her part. "The team has shown character and leadership on their own," said Burton-Durham. "I just try to guide them as much as I can." Kleinecke also said the team is young, but they are not showing it in matches. "This team has a lot of chemistry and they are never giving up," Kleinecke said. "They finish off the matches well which is a sign of maturity." Three sophomores, one junior and a freshman will join Burton-Durham in the singles line-up. Freshman Nancy Dingwall is living up to the high expectations that followed her from Houston Stratford High School where she was a three-time All-American. Dingwall has a 7-1 record this spring and has taken the team's No. 2 positon. ;7 c Roger Hsieh/THE Battalion Head coach Bobby Kleinecke talks with Wilson Pate between sets on her singles tennis match. Sophomores Wilson Pate and Lonna Logan will fill the No. 3 and 4 spots in the Aggie line up. Pate, who is 3-2 at this spring at 3 spot, should make a big impact with her solid net play. Logan, an overpowering player with a wide array of shots, is 6-2 this season. Junior Christine DiNardo, the Southwest Con ference champion at the No. 5 spot, is back from an early season injury and should give stability to See Tennis/ Page 8 A&M coach marches to UCLA Bruins From staff and wire reports Mike Sherman became the sev enth Texas A&M football coach to resign from the Aggies squad, leaving to assume the offensive line job at the University of Cali fornia - Los Angeles. Sherman, the Aggies' offensive line coach since 1989, is the last of head football coach R. C. Slocum's original coaching staff. Sherman had stated last week that he had no desire to move to California. Flowever, he an nounced on Wednesday that he will leave the Aggies to team up with former A&M offensive coor dinator Bob Toledo. Toledo joined the Bruins at the beginning of February. Sherman's lines helped set sev eral A&M records during his five year stay with the Aggies. Sherman came to A&M after coaching at Holy Cross as that Ivy league school's offensive co ordinator. Slocum and athletic director Wally Groff could not be reached for comment. Lady Aggies trample Baylor Bears, 85-72 The Associated Press DALLAS - Martha McClel land had 24 points and 11 re bounds and Lisa Branch added 21 points and 11 assists, helping Texas A&M defeat Baylor 85-72 in the first round of the Southwest Conference tournament Wednes day night. The Lady Aggies (21-6) ad vanced to a Friday quaterfinal against Texas, which defeated Rice 102-57 earlier Wednesday. Mary Lowry scored 30 points for the Lady Bears (13-14) and Amber Seaton added 19 points. A&M pulled away by halftime, grabbing a 44-27 lead behind 51.7 percent shooting. Baylor im proved in the second half, but it was too late. The Lady Bears simply couldn't slow the inside game of the Lady Aggies led by 6-foot-4 centers McClelland and Kelly Cerny. Baylor's tallest player is 6- 1. McClelland made 11 of 13 shots and Cerny scored 16 points and also had 11 rebounds. Mari anne Miller, a 6-2 freshman, came off the bench to add 11 points. Meanwhile, Danielle Viglione scored 23 points and Texas tripled Rice in the second half of a 102-57 thrashing Wednesday in the first round of the Southwest Confer ence tournament. The Lady Longhorns (19-8) led 39-36 at halftime, then outscored the Owls 63-21 in the second half. The 63 second-half points are a school record, besting the 59 UT scored against Rice in 1991. It's also a tournament record. Rice (13-14), which shot 32.3 percent, was led by 14 points from Jessica Garcia and 12 points and nine rebounds from Brendja Conaway. Texas got plenty of contribu tions as five players scored in double figures and 10 players each were used for at least 12 min utes. Holly Graham scored 16 for UT, followed by Amber Hasen- meyer with 15, Nekeshia Hender son with 13 and Angie Jo Ogletree with 11. Graham also had nine re bounds.
