MSC fILM SOCIETY OF TEXAS A&M Page 6 The Battalion Wednesday, February 23,Uj Ferguson Continued from Page 5 be ready to play.' idy Aj The Lady Aggies are 8-2 in Southwest Conference play and 17-5 for the season. The Lady Ag gies are half-a-game behind Texas Tech (9-2) in the SWC standings. TCU is 5-16 for the season and 1-10 in the Conference. In their last meetin, A&M de feated TCU 81-70 on Jan. 26 in Fort Worth. SWC Continued from Page 1 endanger the SWC's long associa tion with the Cotton Bowl. "For all of these years, the Cot ton Bowl has existed solely to make money for the Southwest Confer ence," said John Scovell, past presi dent of the Cotton Bowl. "And we have always represented this entire conference — not just the 'haves' as opposed to the 'have-nots.' "Obviously, some schools have had attendance problems, but I think it would have been far bet ter to come to some arrangement giving them a chance to bring it up to the required level, rather than summarily cutting off four schools and saying, 'You don't be long anymore.'" Big Eight Commissioner Carl James called the reported offers rumors. "The Big Eight will not pub licly address the most recent spec ulation on the issue of expan sion," James said. "We are con ducting on-going, daily discus sions with our athletic directors in regards to football television mat ters. We will continue to move forward in negotiating an arrangement that is best for our institutions." The plan would eliminate schools in the SWC's two largest markets — Southern Methodist in Dallas and Rice and the Uni versity of Houston in Houston — from the new league. The schools' game attendance has suffered in competition with the cities' pro franchises, and schools such as Texas and Texas A&M on the boards and pick it up on de fense," Ferguson said. Hickey said the team will have to stop TCU forwards Donna Kruger and Janelle Hunter and control the boards. She said they will play a zone and man defense and use full-court pressure. McClelland said the team will use basically the same defense they have been playing. "We're just going to add a new half-court defense but basically everything else is the same," Mc Clelland said. Ferguson said the team was dis appointed in the losses to the Uni versity of Texas and the University of Houston, but the team is back on track. "It brought us back to reality," Ferguson said. "We can't let up against any team in the conference. I think we have a great chance to be conference champions if we play like we're capable of playing." Hickey also said the team is ready to take care of business. "We are disappointed that we didn't play better in both of those games," Hickey said. "We have a tough road ahead but I think our kids will rise to the occasion. University of Houston President James Pickering said the Cougars didn't want to be left out. "I was shocked...the University of Houston has made it clear that it wants to be a major player in any alliance," Pickering said. "To the extent we were not considered. I'm very disappointed." Houston has started construc tion of a $25 million athletic com plex. Rice has had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1960-1961. "We need to get our numbers up," Houston athletic director Bill Carr said. "I came here knowing a conference realignment was com ing and that there would be a re duction of the number of Division I-A schools. How it will happen, 1 don't know." SMU vowed that athletics would continue regardless of the possible realignment. That school's football program has been the weakest in the league since it was given the death penalty for booster payments to athletes in 1987. It was banned from fielding a team for two years. "SMU will consider all options as they materialize," the school said in a statement. "It will contin ue to do its best to maintain a vi able Division 1-A athletics program without diverting resources need ed for academic programs." Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes said he regretted the likely end of the SWC as it's been known for so many years. "If someone's left out (of the SWC), I don't know that it's earth- shattering. I'm sure it's bad," Dykes said. Cotton Bowl Continued from Page 5 build up," Crawford said. "It's one that we will never forget and don't plan on forget ting. I think what our plan is, is to continue to add to that tradi tion and continue to be a major part of college football in the fu ture." There is one possibility that could still keep Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylr playing in the fabled Cob: Bowl stadium if they join the! Eight. That scenario involves the! Eight splitting into two divisk with the winner of each si! playing in Dallas to decidefij conference champion. "It's logical to consider that playoff system (in an expand?; Big Eight) might exist," Cra» ford said. "That would beoneal ternative that would be looLfc at." Shaq Continued from Page 5 His free throw shooting (.532 as of last Sunday) is atrocious and inexcusable. This season alone, Shaq has missed 233 of 498 free throws. If he could make 70 percent of his attempts (about av erage for an accomplished cen ter), his scoring average would jump from 29.1 to 30.7 points per game, and the Magic's won-loss record would show the differ ence. The ego problem is not all Shaq's fault. He has been hyped since his freshman year at Louisiana State as the next Wilt Chamberlain, the next Bill Rus sell and the next Hakeem Olaju- won (sorry. Spurs' fans). Truth be told, if lots of people told me day after day that I was a lock for all-time greatness. I'd start to believe it myself.
