SUMMER JOBS & FUN! Hosted by: Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences Changes at catcher, second keys for A&M By Kristine Ramirez The Battalion T exas A&M's baseball sea son will bring some new faces to C.E. "Pat" Olsen Field this year. Head coach Mark Johnson said Aggie fans will see the biggest change at catcher and second base. Johnson said the catcher posi tion will highlight two new faces. Returning will be senior Bri an Johnson, who was the num ber three catcher last year. Challenging Johnson for the po sition will be Navarro Junior College transfer Billy Carroll and Tom Buchman, a freshman from Shawnee Mission, Kan. Buchman is the front runner for the position. "We're very pleased that Buchman is on our team and I think he's got a chance to be the guy," Johnson said. "I think tal ent wise for the gifts that we given out he's got some. "We have two guys that are new that have to do well." In the outfield, Johnson was pleased with Freshman Chad Allen from Duncanville. Allen is listed as an outfielder and pitcher. Also, freshman Sean Alvarez from Clemons High School has caught Johnson's eye. "He may get in the hunt," Johnson said. "He's a new face to look for." Johnson said there is a battle at second base between fresh man Rich Petru from Westbury High School in Houston and Tom Collard, a Junior transfer from Lassen Junior College. Pitching will also bring some interesting newcomers this sea son. Johnson said Trey Moore and Chris Clemons are returning and to watch for Junior Justin Atchley from Cedro Wolly, Wash, and freshman Ryan Rupe from Northbrook High School in Houston. Johnson called Sophomore John Codrington from Bowie High School in Austin "some what of a new face." Both Atchley and Codrington are trying to recover after hav ing bone spurs removed this fall. Johnson said he's hoping to give them maybe an inning in two weeks. He said it will have to be a team effort to replace last year's starters Brian Thomas, Eric Gonzalez, Jeff Granger and Kel ly Wunsch. "Somebody's got to pick up the load, so we're going to see how some of these young guys will do," Johnson said. "I don't think we'll drop off a whole lot as far as our offensive and de fensive output."
