Page 4 The Battalion Wednesday, February?, Search continued for murderers in sneaker theft The Associated Press HOUSTON — Authorities con tinued their search Tuesday for two suspects in the fatal shooting of a high school student, killed af ter handing over his new Nike athletic shoes. Adam Joseph Martin, 18, a ju nior at Wheatley High School, was shot to death Sunday night after he gave his $125 Nike sneak ers as demanded, to two robbers. "They had no reason to shoot him," Gregory Dewayne Penna- mon, 20, said. "They had every thing they wanted. They just straight up shot him." Martin and Pennamon were walking in north Houston Sunday night when a car pulled over and two men inside demanded their shoes, jackets, caps and Penna mon's portable radio. One of the men was armed with a pistol. Pennamon said. Pennamon gave up his shoes, a pair of Adidas sneakers, and nar rowly escaped his friend's fate by sprinting out of the line of fire as the car sped away. "I ran to the corner and ran back, and he (Martin) was lying there," Pennamon said Monday. "I was wiping his face and hold ing his hand, and he said, 'De wayne, I don't feel nothing. I don't feel nothing.'" Martin died at Ben Taub Hos pital about an hour after the shooting. Relatives say Martin had saved money he made giving neighbors haircuts to buy the shoes last week. Homicide investigator Clarence Douglas said investiga tors don't have much to go on, except the vehicle description. The car's passenger-side head light was out. The suspects, he Said, were men in their 20s.
