Billy Joe asks this voice just what the hell he's talking about, to w'hich the voice (who shall go by David, in honor of David Berst, head of the NCAA Infrac tions Committee) replies, "It's very simple. The school could hold tryouts op)en to the entire student body. The team would have up to 100 members and would play at a club level, which is a notch be low Division III." Billy Joe thinks about this for a minute, then asks David what would the status of the current fers would be. ''The current players would be afforded the same opportuni ty as the student body, " David play< says. "But football would no longer be a scholarship sport. This is the approach taken by the Ivy League schools and it works." "Yeah, that's true," Billy Joe snorts, "but that's the damn Ivy League. "This is big-time, head- knockin', spit-flyin' football you're messing with and I don't think that people in this part of the country would take too kind ly to what you're proposing. For instance, athletic scnolar- ships give men and women who may not be able to afford college a chance to get an education. What's your reply to that, fat- butt?" David pauses for a moment. "I would say you're partially correct.
