A&M held the nation's leading female scorer, Kristy Ryan, to 15 points, her lowest total of the 1993-94 season. By Nick Georgandis The Battalion The Texas A&M women's basketball team got off to a bit of a slow start Sunday, before running away from an overwhelmed Cal State Sacramento squad. Led by sophomore guard Donyale Cana da's career-high 18 points, the Lady Ag gies defeated the Cal State Sacramento Hor nets 87-63 at G. Rollie White Coliseum. The Aggies moved to 11-3 on the year and, by virtue of Texas' upset of Texas Tech on Saturday af ternoon, lead the Southwest Conference race with a 3-0 record. Canada said that al though the Lady Ag gies started slowly, they felt they were the superior team. "They appeared slow on film and didn't seem to have too many good ball han dlers," Canada said. "We felt that if we could put pressure on them, it would create opportunities for us and make things hap pen," she said. Hornets' senior for ward Kristy Ryan came into the game leading the nation in scoring at 31.4 points per game. A swarming Aggie defense, however, held Ryan to 15 points, her lowest total of the sea son. A&M head women's basketball coach Lynn Hickey said she was pleased with the defen sive work of her play ers against Ryan. "Her game is to dri ve to the basket, she is not a very good spot-up shooter, " Hickey said. "We had very good in dividual efforts on her by all her defenders." Also contributing to the Aggie cause Sunday were sophomore Martha McClelland with 16 points on 8-of-8 shooting and sopho more Lisa Branch who recorded 10 points, nine assists and five steals. Sophomore Kelly Cerny also blocked four shots. The Lady Aggies recorded their season high in free throw shooting, going 12-of- 14 from the line. Sunday's game con cluded a five-game homestand for A&M. The Lady Aggies re turn to conference play on Wednesday with a road game at Texas Christian University. A&M 87. The A&M squad next plays on Tuesday against TCU. Men's team hampered by poor shooting By Jose de Jesus Ortiz The Battalion Texas A&M's men's basketball team blasted to a 10-point lead in the first minutes of Saturday's game, but could not maintain it as Siena University downed A&M, 62- 73. Senior forward Damon Johnson scored 10 of his 14 points during the Aggies 12-2 run, forcing Siena head coach Mike Deane to call three time outs in the four-minute span. "We took the timeouts because we didn't want the game to get away from us in the first half," Deane said. "I also told the guys that Texas A&M is capable of scor ing droughts. "We took Damon Johnson and put (junior forward Brian) Bidlingmyer on him after the sec ond timeout. After the third time out, I just told the guys to stay in the game." The switch worked for the Saints (13-3) as Johnson only scored four points in the rest of the first half and went scoreless in the second half. With the switch, the Saints forced A&M to shoot from the perimeter and gained control of the boards, out rebounding the Aggies 51-37.
