MEET WADE PooLE. LONGTIME AmcO TO THE LATE TuBULARnAN. MEET Bartholomew by Kahili Newspaper Continued from Page 1 said. "But we will pursue this, and see if there is action we can take." In a letter to The Battalion on January 19, Mark Jasek, a graduate pharmacology student, said he was persuaded by a salesman to buy the Houston Chronicle. The man exaggerated the bene fits of the Chronicle's "Extra Card," a legitimate offer, which provides discounts at area businesses. "He told me they were good at grocery stores and the bookstore on campus," Jasek said. "He said it was good at Winn Dixie and Kroger, but they hadn't heard about it, and another Chronicle salesman I ran into hadn't either." Julian McMurrey, local distribu tor for the Chronicle, said the man worked for Sizemore Enterprises, a large newspaper distributing firm that has a contract with the Chroni cle, and was brought in from out of town to sell the paper. The man had signed all the re ceipts and apparently made no ef fort to hide what he was doing, Mc Murrey said. "I've been the distributor for the Chronicle for 20 years, and I've never seen something so blatantly stupid," he said. The man also allowed sub scribers to back-date checks, which goes against specified policy. "This is just an example of how one loose cannon can cause a lot of damage," he said. "It hurts the stu dents, it hurts the Chronicle and it hurts me, because I have to buy all those papers." Jasek said he sent letters of com plaint to the Chronicle's main office and the local Better BusinessBt reau in addition to the letter hese to The Battalion. McMurrey said the incident® reported to the Chronicle's mac agement, who called the preside of Sizemore Enterprises, who® probably fire the salesman. He will be fined one and ah times the amount he earnedr commission for misrepresentatir McMurrey said. "He won't be selling the Chroc cle anymore, and since thatisa most all of Sizemore's business don't know why they wouldkee him," he said. McMurrey said the student who were given the card can use at many locations around Brya' College Station, but those wk signed up with that man, aboutlt people in all, are being allowedf imbursements.
