Having called the spOilers a semi-pro team last year, the loss solidified my earlier statements. Maybe my buddies will quit bothering me about the spOilers' 11-game win-streak. I sympathize with Oiler fans, but now realize how trivial both games were to real life. Sports should be a part of one's life, not one's purpose in life. When more than a million people have their sleep inter rupted by an earth shattering earthquake in Los Angeles, the last thing on their minds was the local sports scene. Some idiot - and I mean idiot - reporter was worried about the status of Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and other L.A. horse tracks. What was he thinking? With more than 30 confirmed deaths, highway on-ramps de stroyed, gas lines exploding, wa ter lines damaged and power lines destroyed, could he not find a better thing to inquire about? While discussing the earth quake with my two fellow Cali fornians from Hart Hall, the last thing on our minds was the local See Spoilers/ Page 6 baiw Georgia on A&M's mind Aggies to alter aerial attack From staff and wire reports The Texas A&M football team has a new offensive coordinator in the person of Steve Ens- minger. Head coach R.C. Slocum an nounced on Tuesday the hiring of Ensminger, former quarter backs coach and passing game coordinator for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. "Steve is considered by coach es across the country as one of the bright offensive minds around college football," Slocum said. "I wanted a change in direc tion of our offense and I believe Steve's style of offense will be attractive to quar terbacks, tailbacks and wide receivers. " I f you look at his numbers at Georgia, you'll see evidence of that fact." Ensminger said he is pleased to come to a school with so many great football traditions makes. "I'm excited about coming to R.C. Slocum Texas A&M No.l, because of R.C. Slocum, No. 2, because of the tradition surrounding Aggie football and No. 3, because, of the tradition of winning football and the talent at Texas A&M," Ens minger said. "I've spoken with the mem bers of the offensive staff and they are excellent coaches." During his three year tenure at Georgia, the Bulldogs com piled a 24-11 record, which in cluded an Independence Bowl win over Arkansas in 1991 and a Citrus Bowl win over Ohio State in 1992. In 1991, Ensminger's first year See Georgia/ Page 6 Super rematch or dream game? Playoff revenge on teams' minds The Associated Press With the Super Bowl sweepstakes down to four teams, there are a couple of intriguing possibilities for the NFL championship in At lanta on Jan. 30. 1) Kansas City vs. San Francisco, Joe Mon tana vs. Steve Young. Montana is still the Bay Area's favorite. Young the upstart who took the job of the man who won four NFL titles there. 2) Dallas vs. Buffalo, a rematch of last year's Super Bowl blowout, with the Bills going for a record fourth straight loss. Last year, the Cowboys won 52-10. The Bills and Chiefs will meet in Buffalo next Sunday for the AFC championship, while the 49ers and Cowboys will play in Dallas for the NFC title. It's almost as pre dicted — Kansas City's win in Houston on Sun day was the weekend's only upset. And it brings us four quarterbacks — Mon tana, Young, Jim Kelly and Troy Aikman — who have eight Super Bowl starts, four Super Bowl MVP trophies and three league MVP awards among them. But gone with the weekend are some of the other fun possibili ties — like Houston- Dallas for the champi onship of Texas first, then the rest of the world; Giants-Bills be tween Dan Reeves and Marv Levy to deter mine the first coaches to lose four Super Bowls; and Giants-Raiders — Phil Simms vs. Jeff Hostetler on the field instead of in the New York media. But we have what we have, and this is what it looks like: Kansas City (13-5) at Buffalo (13-4) The Chiefs won 23-7 on Nov. 28, but that was in Kansas City, not in the arctic wasteland that Rich Stadium be comes every January. The Bills are 7-0 in playoff games there, al though not all have been easy, including Saturday's 29-23 win over the Raiders. The key may be the Kansas City defense, which came alive against Houston with nine sacks. Montana's magic helped — two touchdown passes in 54 seconds of the fourth See Montana/ Page 6 Lady Aggies vs. Lady Cougars 7 p.m. G. Rollie White Coliseum A&M women's basketball team to face tenacious Houston squad By Jose de Jesus Ortiz The Battalion There will be a big change in the Lady Aggie basketball team's lineup when it plays the Lady Cougars of the University of Houston tonight at 7 at G. Rollie White Coliseum. Martha McClelland,A&M's 6-foot-4 sophomore center, has been named to the starting line up after a 20-point, nine-re bound performance against Rice on Saturday. McClelland said she was comfortable coming off the bench for A&M (9-3, 2-0), and has no problem sharing playing time with center Kelly Cerny. "To me it doesn't matter," McClelland said. "I am just one of those players that likes to play where and when needed. I have no problem coming off the bench." While on the court, she will be expected to guard the Lady Cougars' Pat Luckey, who was a high school All-American. Luckey was chosen as the Southwest Conference presea son freshman of the year, and leads Houston offensively with 19 points per game. "We expect them to be a physical and powerful team," McClelland said. "Our focus will be to stop her (Luckey) and their guards' penetration." McClelland said she would like to see all the Lady Aggies get in on the scoring against the Lady Cougars. "We need another game like the one against Rice (12 of 14 Lady Aggies scored) when everyone is scoring," McClel land said. "Not just five or sev en scoring, but all 15 players on the team." Luckey may not be the only problem the Lady Aggies will have to deal with against Hous ton, said A&M head coach Lynn Hickey: A&M will also have to guard against the Lady Cougars' athleticism. "Houston, besides Texas, is probably the most athletic team in the conference," Hickey said. "I don't think we have faced a team with such power and ath leticism." Hickey said the Lady Aggies will need to work hard on the boards and hold on to the ball against the tenacious defense Houston (5-7, 0-2) provides. "One of our keys will be re bounding and protecting the ball," Hickey said. "We will see some major pressing against us." Hickey said a victory over the Lady Cougars is essential for A&M to have a chance at first place in the SWC. The Lady Aggies have never finished higher than fourth in confer ence. "This is our third straight conference game at home," Hickey said. "And we need to take care of business here be cause later we will be forced to play away." 0 ^€aAA ^poccelleatce 1994 BSC CAREER FAIR BANQUET SERIES it® Wmsti with jjtom yompj/wdte cwwjimvy.
