Bears' tailback Strait dismissed from football program for 'policy violations' The Associated Press WACO — Running back Robert Strait, who scored four touchdowns in Baylor's 38-14 vic tory over Rice last week, has been dismissed from the Bears' football team, the school announced Thursday. Coach Chuck Reedy an nounced that the former Cuero High School star was dismissed for violations of team policies. He wouldn't elaborate on the viola tions "Robert has been dismissed from the team for violations of team policies," Reedy said in a prepared statement. "He will not play against Texas this week." Reedy said John Henry will re place Strait in the lineup against the Texas Longhorns on Saturday. Strait was suspended from Baylor's Nov. 6 game against Georgia Tech because he missed a team curfew. In high school. Strait became one of the leading rushers and scorers in the history of Texas high school football. Strait, a 6-1, 240-pound senior, ends his Baylor career with 1,856 yards and 32 touchdowns, second most in Baylor history. He was primarily a backup this year behind Bradford Lewis, gain ing 347 yards on 85 carries and nine TDs. Strait also caught eight passes for 93 yards. Reedy said he was upset about the move. "I was very surprised and very disappointed," said Reedy, who had lauded Strait for his attitude following the earlier suspension. After missing the Georgia Tech game. Strait returned to earn Southwest Conference player of the week honors after the Rice game. "I hate it," Reedy said, "but we're doing what's best for the football team and the football pro gram. We have all the confidence in the world that the guys filling in at that spot will do a good job.' "Any time you lose a guy, it has an effect on the team," Reedy said. "But I've always felt like whether it's an injury or suspen sion or whatever else, someone has to step up and play. "And I think everybody else has to just pull together a little bit more. Before coming to Baylor, Strait was heavily recruited out of Class 3A Cuero in Austin, where he was a consensus Parade Magazine All- American, and rated the top back in the country by Super Prep mag azine. Strait had the second-highest rushing yardage total in Texas high school history with 8,404 yards. He scored 127 touchdowns. Johnson stayed away from the home game against the Arkansas Express "in support of the four players whose eli gibility has been delayed/'he said in a memo to assistant sports information director Tommy Newsom. Earlier Thursday, SWC commissioner Steven j. Hatchell announced the tem porary suspension of four players pending an investiga tion of Baylor's basketball program. The SWC and Baylor are conducting a joint investiga tion into the eligibility status of Jason Ervin, Tyrone Davis, Shannon Brantley and Marcus Thompson. All are junior col lege transfers to Baylor. Coach Johnson says he be lieves all the players are eligi ble. "It is my belief that these student-athletes are eligible according to all Baylor, SWC Friday, > P l n rpi h heF Sene 45 t< r or of U.E and NCAA rules," Johnson! ndinten said in the statement.
