The Faculty Senate put forth a proposal to you with their recom mendation that students attending this uni versity be required to take multiculturalism classes. Sir, you are in charge of Texas A&M's history. More importantly, you are in charge and responsible for the students' history. Dr. Gage, the only way that you can vote on this issue is "no." Proponents claim this three-hour course will make Aggies more sensitive to diverse cultural background. This is simply "soft" history; it is historical revisionism designed to advance the agenda of a few socialistic professionals in academia. What good will a class on Navajo Indians do when applying for a job at IBM that requires logical thinking skills, computer knowledge and an immense knowledge of mathematics? American culture has always been known as a melting pot culture. However, Dr. Gage, America has its own culture and it is currently being taught in such classes as History 105 and 106. These classes are not necessary; to be successful in America, one needs to assimilate to the American culture. These multicultural ism classes are at the root of the problem that divides America into racially opposed fac tions. Texas A&M does not need this. Dr. Gage, this issue rests upon your shoul ders. I don't know how you'll decide this is sue, but if you do care about the student wel fare at Texas A&M, you will not let this agen da be forced upon the students. was my choice as to when I return to school. Thanks to Mr. Fiechtner, I graduated on the 14th of September. When I returned to classes on the 15th, I discovered I had an accounting exam in less than a week. The professor was very helpful and told me I could take the make-up exam, but I had to have it cleared with her supervi sor. I ended up having to speak with Mr. Fiechtner. I assumed that since he knew my situation it would be no problem. Quite the contrary. I was told that it was my choice to join the Army and that no, I could not take the make-up exam. I don't think Mr. Fiechtner gives a damn about students here at A&M. Since I read Stephen Cook's letter, I have already met two people who have Fiechtner horror stories. Mr. Fiechtner, I know Aggies, and you, sir, are no Aggie. we've experienced in our four years at Texas A&M. We have attended every game this year (even Norman) and every home game in our undergraduate career at A&M, so you can't say we lack spirit. This spirit is exactly what we displayed at halftime. As the group we were with was leaving the game, we all commented on how much fun we had at halftime. The crowd was so enthusiastic despite the lack of entertainment or competition from SMU. We are traditionalists just as much as the next Aggie, but what you call bad bull we call having fun. There is no reason why we can't expand our spirit to include crowd par ticipatory events such as the Wave (along with the traditional yells and War Hymn, of course). From what we could tell, everyone was having a good time. Beat the Hell outta Louisville! Scott Quinby Class of‘94 James LeBlanc Class of‘94 Argument is open to all John Shea Class of'95 Barone: Fiechtner is honest and sensitive Mark McElwain Class of '97 Another 'horror story' I have another story to tell about our won derful director of undergraduate programs for the College of Business, Les Fiechtner. The summer after my freshman year, I joined the Army Reserves and was sent to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where I spent my summer completing Basic Training and AIT. I was set to return in time for fall classes, but my graduation date (from AIT) was changed. Now I was set to return on September 14, two weeks after the start of classes. I told my Company Commander who spoke with Les Fiechtner and was informed that I didn't have to return any certain time and that it Our basketball program brings a number of recruits on campus, and we have cooper ating faculty meet with these student-ath letes. Les Fiechtner is one of the faculty members who not only meets with the stu dent-athletes but also spends quality time identifying the human nature of a rather large university. He has been straight-for ward, honest and sensitive with each and every student. He has come in on off days and arranged his busy schedule to help us. As the basketball coach at Texas A&M, I have to make a number of value judgments in regards to the recruitment of student-ath letes. In my opinion, Les Fiechtner epito mizes the type of teacher who is vital to a university that cares about its students. We will continue to have Les meet with our stu dents for as long as he wants to be a part of our program. Tony Barone Texas A&M Men's Head Basketball Coach Yell leaders overreact I think it's amazing how some individuals think that they have the exclusive right to or dain how harmony shall present itself in modem society. Apparently, John Velasquez falls into this group. He shames College Republicans for "stick ing their noses where tney don't belong," showing the same kind of intolerance for alter native thought that he supposedly is fighting. He dismisses their views by stating that they "do not belong on a world class campus." Well, neither does your attitude, sir. You are practicing the same kind of prejudice and exclusion that would be publicly denounced if it assailed a race, gender, faith or sexual preference. Something far more important and far less respected these days finds itself the victim of your self-righteous attack. It is a group of people with beliefs, priorities and ambitions unfounded in their biological circumstances who just happen to disagree with you. It isn't that we don't agree with the mes sage behind harmony among people. It's that the instruments that are being used to arrive at that particular outcome are unsatisfactory; they are unfair, and they do more damage than good. None of this means that either of us is right. The difference is that some of us are willing to listen. Some of us are willing to ar gue. Some of us are willing to stick in there until the best possible solution has been found. So don't shut us out. Don't dismiss us. You will be just as guilty of intolerance and just as ignorant of other beliefs and cul tures if you do. Get a grip! In response to the yell leaders' problem with the Wave, we would like to say that the SMU game was the most exciting Jenne Hamlin Class of'96 PICK UP YOUR COPY.
