Tut Battauon hen most students were 16 they had just received their urivers' licenses and were juniors in high school, but Texas A&M student Shelley Clar- idge is tackling three majors, and she doesn't even have her driver's license yet. Claridge is working towards degrees in math, genetics and Russian. "The three majors part doesn't seem strange to me, otherwise Td be bored/' said Claridge, a 16- year-old from College Station. "But the license part 1 hope is go ing to be fixed soon. My mom says she is going to put me in dri- vers-ed over Christmas." A National Merit and Presi dent's Endowed Scholar, Claridge is one of 10 students in this year's freshman class that is 16 years old or younger. She entered the first grade after only three weeks in kindergarten, and attended second grade for a short time before being placed in third grade. Claridge spent one year at A&M Consolidated High School in which she completed two years worth of high school studies. She finished her high school education at The Texas Academy of Math and Science (TAMS) in Denton. TAMS is a college preparatory school that offers advanced students the opportunity to live and attend classes on the campus of the Univer sity of North Texas. While at TAMS, students concurrently complete high school and college work. Claridge entered TAMS at the age of 13 and in the two years she was there, she completed 78 hours of college course work. Claridge first applied to A&M in the eighth grade, when she was 12, but she was turned down. Even though she scored 1270 and 1370 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the University told her she needed some high school experience be fore she would be admitted. When Claridge applied to A&M this past year, not only did she have high school experience and college credit, she also had retaken the SAT and scored a 1520. Now taking 17 hours, Claridge is the youngest student in most of her classes. However, Claridge said she doesn't feel pressured or awkward being around people who are two to six years older than she is. Slocum By Cheryl Heller Slocum The Battalion A Mexia woman, who won a raffle sponsored by Texas A&M's Delta Zeta sorority, spent an afternoon with Texas A&M head football coach R.C. Slocum Wednesday. Linda Archibald, who had the win ning ticket in the raffle held last week, also received a $500 Texas A&M schol arship from the sorority, which will be used by her son David, who currently attends Blinn College in College Station. Archibald said she was very sur prised when she learned that she won ihe raffle. "It's a real change of pace," she said. "It's very exciting to have a chance to watch the Aggies and their coach at work, and I'm really glad I won the scholarship for David." Archibald and her son met Slocum at the training field and accompanied him on a tour of the football stadium and to a closed workout of the Texas A&M football team. Delta Zeta raised $2,000 in the raffle. The money goes toward the sorority's charity, the Gaulludet School of the Hearing Impaired. Delta Zeta Ways and Means Chairper son Christina Robinson said she came up with the idea for a raffle because she was trying to think of an event that would get Greeks involved with A&M. "I thought that with the raffle, not only would we do something for the students as far as the scholarship, but also some thing for our philanthropy as well," she said. "It was the best for both worlds." Students who have had at least four semesters of college level French can participate in TAMU's reciprocal exchange program with the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.
