Hispanic says schools shouldn't teach culture By Lisa Elliott The Battalion 1 Multiculturalism is a separatist movement 1 lhat promotes a breakdown in the spirit of com munity in America, said a Hispanic politician ) ram Arlington Tuesday night. ' Daniel Fernandez, state chairman of the Re publican Hispanic Assembly of Texas, told i members of College Republicans that he does not want to be considered a minority because * that implies inferiority. The courses proposed by Texas A&M's Fac ulty Senate are unnecessary and would promote the power of one group over another, he said. 'The use of labels to separate us, such as hy- | phens, like African-American, is totally un- American," he said. Fernandez said it is not the job of the schools | to teach culture because that is taught at home by the family and the community. America is a place where everybody came from other cultures and everybody contributed to its formation, he said. Immigrants came here to be immersed in the American culture, not the culture they left behind. "Nobody came here to be a hyphenated American," he said. "They came to be an Amer ican." Fernandez said he is tired of other people as suming he got an education from government aid because lie is Hispanic. "Someone told me in 1968 that I was a minor ity and I was underprivileged because my name was Fernandez," he said. v This was news to me and to my mom." Multiculturalism would add to the further di vision of the United States and cause more ten sion between the races than it would prevent, he said. At Monday's Faculty Senate meeting, faculty members will decide whether to add multicul tural courses to the core curriculum. As a result, the College Republicans have stepped up their efforts to voice their opposition. Richard Stadelmann, associate professor of philosophy and humanities and faculty adviser to the College Republicans, said many faculty members have expressed their disapproval of adding the courses but didn't feel like express ing their opinions openly. Stadelmann said that is the biggest problem of this issue because the number of people op posing the multicultural courses outnumber those faculty members who support them, but the people opposed to the classes are not speak ing up. Phil Meuret, president of the College Repub licans, said the liberals are winning on campus because they are the most vocal. He urged stu dents to get involved in the next few days to let their opinion be heard on the issue. Habitat for Humanity to hold benefit concert By Michele Brinkmann The Battalion The Texas A&M University Habitat for Humanity chapter will sponsor a benefit concert Thursday loraise money for the charity's Hryan-College Station chapter. Scott Thomas, the A&M chap- ler's vice president in charge of fund raising, said the money raised will pay for the construction of a new nouse. "It's a $5 donation, so even if someone doesn't know if they can ffi, they can still make a donation," »said. "The money will be used to purchase materials for the con struction of a new house." Three local bands — Elvis Bukowski, Granny Smith and Add Silence — will perform at the Alorthgate Cafe concert at 9:30 p.m. Thomas said the charity hopes bsell 200 tickets and raise $1000- jlSOO for the Bryan-College Station chapter. Tickets can be purchased at Marooned Records, the MSC and Northgate Cafe. Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide, non-denominational busing ministry whose purpose is to eliminate poverty housing and to make simple, affordable housing available to the public. The charity works in partner ship with communities and fami lies in need to build houses that are sold to low-income families at no interest and no profit. Mandy Mathias, president of 1 ■ the A&M chapter, said the concert is only a small part of the chapter's job within the international organi zation. "Our job is to help our affiliate. We provide them with volunteers and provide fund raising," she said. The A&M students build houses for low-income families every Sat urday, along with local volunteers. The chapter, founded in 1992, is one of 600 campus chapters nation wide. "This is a totally voluntary job," Mathias said. "Students can help as much as they want. If anyone has spare time, they can come on out." Mathias said the A&M chapter will begin building its own house at the end of November. Rusleen Maurice, president of the Bryan-College Station board of directors for Habitat for Humanity, said she is very thankful for the campus chapter. "The A&M chapter does such wonderful things for us," she said. On a normal Saturday, she said, between 12-15 volunteers help build houses on property that has been donated by individuals or by the cities of Bryan and College Sta tion. All Habitat projects adhere to a non-discrimination family selection process, starting with the receipt of an application. The families are evaluated based on three criteria: need, ability to repay the loan and references. E. L. PLO walks out of peace negotiations with Israel The Associated Press TABA, Egypt — The PLO walked out of peace talks with Israel on Tuesday, accusing the Israelis of trying to back out of an agree ment to withdraw from occupied lands. Nabil Shaath, the PLO's chief negotiator, charged that Israel wants to redeploy its troops rather than pull them out of the occu pied Gaza Strip and the town of Jericho in the West Bank. Israel's withdrawal plan, he said, ran counter to the Sept. 13 Is- rael-Palestine Liberation Organization agreement on Palestinian au tonomy. The Palestinian walkout was the first major snag since negotia tions began three weeks ago on implementing the first phase of the autonomy plan. Both sides said they wanted to resume the talks. The talks in Taba are meant to define how Israel will transfer some powers to Palestinians in Gaza and Jericho under terms of the Israeli-PLO accord.
