In a public referendum the day ■ before, this western Massachu- Isetts community of 18,000 nar- Irowly rejected a proposed Wal- ■ Mart as threatening to their small- Itown way of life. “It's a very unique town, and I idon't think we need big business- les like that to come in and take ■ away from the beauty of the ■ town," said Tami Silk. It was the latest setback to the ■ nation's largest retailer in its push ito transplant its style of Gargan- ■ tuan storefronts and Lilliputian ■ pricing to New England. "I've realized that if you feel victimized, you have to define what is making you unhappy and change it," she says in Sunday's Parade magazine. “It's your own responsibility." The 41-year-old actress said she overcame anorexia on her own during her years on "The Pa- tridge Family," and beat an alcohol problem while starring in "L.A. Law." "After years of wanting to be in control, 1 finally became secure enough to give up that need," she said. "I guess Vve come full circle." She also took the bold career steps of walking away from two hit TV shows. Dey left "L.A. Law" after several years, seeking a change. She quit "Love and War" after one sea son because of creative differences with producers. Women line up to see Fabio BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Women lined up by the hundreds for a face-to-face with Fabio, the romance novel cover-boy-turned author. "He's the sexiest man in the world, no doubt about it," said Becky Bruner, 26, who waited an hour for an autograph. The Italian model was in town Wednesday and Thursday promoting his romance novel, "Pirate,” his perfume, "Mediterraneum," and his CD of ro mantic musings, "Fabio After Dark." "I've always loved Southern belles," said Fabio, 32. "They're very pretty and very genuine." At a book signing, Fabio wore black cowboy boots, black pants and a black leather shirt — par tially unbuttoned, of course. Chris Whitley... busted AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) - Singer Chris Whitley got the boot without even setting foot outside the airport after he was busted by a drug-sniffing dog. Whitley arrived in New Zealand on Thursday morning and was expelled hours later because about 2 grams of marijuana was found in his shoe, authorities said. The 32-year-old American singer is best known for the tune "Kick the Stones," featured on the soundtrack of the film "Thelma and Louise." Whitley was scheduled as the headline act for the weekend Ponsonby Music Festival. CkSi Z> um ScHnitzeC 9-Cans Wigil ‘Restaurant & CCub 218 N.
