Travel BASTROP — A woman accused of murdering her newborn son tes tified Thursday that the baby was stillborn anei that she disposed of the body in the trash because she could not afford a funeral. Often crying on the witness stand, Susan Bienek, 34, of Bastrop County, said she did not even know she was pregnant until the night she delivered the boy. She said the baby was stillborn and that she wrapped him in a sheet and placed him in a storage shed. She is accused of murdering the baby by failing to provide adequate care, thus causing him to die from exposure on or about Dec. 31,1992. Bienek testified that on the morning of Dec. 31 she took the child in a garbage bag to a roadside trash collection site, where the bag was picked up and eventually taken to a southwest Bastrop County landfill. The body was found Jan. 5. Bienek said she felt shame for leaving the child for garbage collec tion, but that she could not afford a funeral. On Wednesday, a pathologist, who specializes in baby deaths, said the baby was born alive. An autopsy found air in the lungs, which "is a conclusive finding that the child was born alive," since no cardiopulmonary resuscitation took place. Dr. Linda Norton said. "The child was completely normal," said Norton, a Dallas patholo gist in private practice. Air found in various internal organs indicated "we have a child who is sucking and swallowing air," she said. "It would have appeared to be alive to anyone looking at it."
