Page 6 The Battalion Monday, October4,1953 Fort Worth readies for 5-day religious crusade The Associated Press FORT WORTH — It's been more than 20 years since a religious crusade has made its way to Fort Worth. But as the religious empire of Dallas tele vangelist Robert Tilton appears to be crum bling, another evangelist is preparing to make his debut in this neighboring city. Luis Palau — the evangelist some call the heir apparent to Billy Graham — will open the Greater Fort Worth Crusade on Oct. 20. For two years, 10,000 volunteers from 500 area churches have been preparing Fort Worth for an interdenominational crusade on a scale not seen since Graham visited Will Rogers Coliseum in 1951. The Greater Fort Worth Crusade at the Fort Worth Tarrant County Convention Center, scheduled Oct. 20-24, will bring together An glo, African-American, Hispanic and Asian church members who hope to make a spiritual and social impact on the community, said for mer Fort Worth Mayor Bob Bolen, co-chair man of the crusade. Officials expect up to 10,000 people to turn out each day. “This is a great opportunity to see one of the outstanding evangelists in the country to day who is trying to draw us back to the prin ciples that many of us feel have made this country great," Bolen said. Palau has close ties to Graham, after whom he says he patterns his evangelistic efforts and financing methods. Planning for the Fort Worth crusade began when Palau visited Fort Worth in 1991. Volun teers and a four-person paid staff have con tacted people in almost 1,600 churches within a 60-mile radius of Fort Worth, said Gary Turner, crusade coordinator. A $434,000 bud get raised locally pays for advertising, conven tion center rental and staff. Palau, 58, will receive no fee for speaking at the Fort Worth event. The Tarrant Baptist Association, which in cludes about 200,000 Southern Baptists in 191 churches and 250 missions, is supporting the meeting, along with independent Bible churches. Assemblies of God, Pentecostal and other evangelical congregations.
