"We are about where we were last year at this time at a compara ble stage," Johnson said. "I be lieve we'll go out and get better every week and eventually be the team we want to be." The rested defending NFL champions took advantage of a bye week to get running back Em- mitt Smith revved up and ready to go. Smith, who held out all of training camp and two regular season losses in a bitter contract struggle with owner Jerry Jones, will make his first start of the sea son on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers in Texas Stadium. He played in a 17-10 victory over the Phoenix Cardinals, get ting 45 yards on 8 carries. "Emmitt will get the bulk of the load against the Packers," Johnson said. "As the game goes on we might make substitutions and play Derrick Lassie some. "Lassie might not get to play and he might play half of the game." Lassie, a rookie fourth-round draft pick from Alabama, rushed 49 times for 187 yards and two touchdowns in Smith's absence. "Lassie really came through for us and now the pressure is off," Johnson said. "He could give us a good change of pace. Emmitt is more of an inside runner and Las sie is more of an outside runner." Johnson said he wasn't "overly concerned" with the Cowboys 1-2 start. "I don't think anybody has ex actly jumped out," Johnson said. "We're behind but we have the prospect of getting better. And I think we will." The Cowboys will unveil a new middle linebacker for the game. Ken Norton has replaced the de moted Robert Jones in the middle. Jones made zero tackles in the Phoenix game. "I wasn't satisfied without play in that position," said John son. "I will put our best players on the field. Ken Norton has been an outstanding player for some time." Norton will be replaced ai weakside linebacker by rookie Darrin Smith, a second round draft pick out of Miami. "I was disappointed in Danin not getting to camp when it opened but he has improved since day one," Johnson said. "He'sstill not close to the kind of player he will be but he is getting better every game." In one dramatic scene, however, Pardee does call a time-out at the correct time. Striking Distance (★★★) - Superb acting and exciting ac tion scenes. After years and years of being the most mediocre team in the Ameri can League, the Texas Rangers finally make their move to the top. The bats of Gonzalez, Palmer and Palmeiro come to life as the Rangers stay within "striking distance" of the American League West title past the month of July. The movie does leave some questions unanswered, though, such as would Texas be playing Toronto if they had gotten more consistent middle relief pitching? Starting pitching? Any pitching? The movie also explores the possibility of the Rangers not trading Harold Baines for prospects Wilson Alvarez and Sammy Sosa. Judgment Night (★) — In this thriller set on the campus of the University of Texas, Longhorn head coach John Mackovic decides to go for a winning two-point conversion against the Rice Owls. But in the end Mackovic is forced to kick an extra-point knowing that he can't trust his offense to score. Anyway, all his players are too busy arguing with each other to produce touchdowns. In one sub-plot, linebacker Winfred Tubbs goes a week without having one or both of his hands wrapped. Video Releases Leap of Faith (★★★) - Needing in the worst way a 7- foot-6 center who weighs 110 pounds and who hasn't played basketball in two years due to a Mormon mission, the Philadelphia 76ers take Shawn Bradley as their first round draft choice. They spend the rest of the year force-feeding the gentle giant so opposing players will stop counting his ribs. A Few Good Men (★★) - This dramatic comedy goes through the trials and tribula tions of the Dallas Mavericks at their rookie camps. Coach Quinn Buckner knows most of the players who will make the team but is still looking for that diamond in the rough. One of the greatest scenes is when Buckner realizes that his team is still three players away from a championship ring and he recruits Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon and anyone who can dribble out of a double team. Dave (★★★★) — A lowly sports columnist has a bad case of writer's block and is forced to write an article about movies with fictional sports plots. Scott Baio plays the lead and gives a wonder ful performance of a man and his writing dream. Jack Nicholson and Clint East- wood are sensational as Baio's mentors.
