Oilers offense sputtering as Moon eclipsed The Associated Press HOUSTON - The Houston Oilers' run-and-shoot offense has come to this. It can't outscore one man. San Diego didn't score a touch down and was stymied most of the day by the Oilers defense. But when it counted, the Chargers drove down for John Carney's sixth field goal of the game. Carney and the Chargers post ed an 18-17 victory with three sec onds to play. That left the Oilers with a fa miliar task on Monday - trying to figure out what happened on Sun day. Sound familiar? The run-and- shoot is misfiring. The defense is playing outstanding games but al lowing the late drive that costs them the game. A bad perfor mance by quarterback Warren Moon is a new factor added to the equation. "We still have too many things that kill us off," coach Jack Pardee said. "We seem to get a good dri ve early and another one late and you can't win with inconsistency like that." Moon was pulled from the game for the first time in his ca reer (other than injury) with the game on the line after throwing four interceptions, but Cody Carl son, his replacement, avoided talk of a controversy. "There is no quarterback con troversy," Carlson said. "The fact is we are not playing good on of fense and one guy is not the rea son." Carlson completed fourofsii passes for 43 yards and complete! an apparent touchdown passlo Haywood Jeffires late in the game that was called incomplete when the official ruled Jeffires was out- of-bounds. "This is no time to panic," Carlson said. "Who's to say we wouldn't have gone in and score! if Warren had stayed in the game. I'm glad they have confidence in me but it didn't change any thing." Moon, who disagreed wit!) Pardee's switch to Carlson, has thrown six interceptions in three games, as the entire offense has struggled in every game. Texas Tech opens league play against Baylor The Associated Press LUBBOCK, - The Texas Tech Red Raiders, who have skidded on a two-game losing streak, must stop letting the big plays get by, coach Spike Dykes said Monday. Texas Tech (1-2) opens its Southwest Conference season Sat urday afternoon against Baylor (2- 1) in Waco. Dykes credited the Bears with pulling out scrappy victories this season, including last week's game at Utah State. The Bears won 28-24 in the final 11 seconds. Baylor opened its season coming from behind to beat Fresno State 42-39 with 1:59 remaining. "Success breeds success. I think that really, really does help their confidence level," Dykes said. Texas Tech's own come-from- behind rallies have started too late to salvage losses to Nebraska and Georgia. In Athens, Ga., last Saturday the Red Raiders languished be hind 28-7 at halftime but edged within eight points in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs prevailed, 52-37, for their first win of 1993. There were some bright spots for the Raiders, though. Senior quarterback Robert Hall had 34 completions to break Billy Joe Tol liver's school record of 28. Senior split end Lloyd Hill caught 10 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns despite the Bulldogs' use of trick coverages. The loss featured big plays that Dykes lamented Monday: Geor gia's Eric Zeier 80-yard touch down pass on the game's second play, Chris McCranie returning Tech's second punt 45 yards fora score, and Jerry Jerman breaking away on a Tech kickoff for 73 yards. "We shot ourselves in the foot," Dykes said. "We'dgela fumble right off the bat, and pick it up, return it back to the 35-or 40- yard line and we're offsides." The Texas Tech-Baylor matchup will feature the SWCs leading offenses. The Red Raiders are averaging 480.3 yards per game, while the Bears have amassed a 440.3 yards per game average. Clay Continued from Page 7 elaborate playoff systems. A team with a losing record can actually get a shot at the playoffs in each league. Those teams are compensated for mediocrity. There is valid reason for the playoff systems in other sports. An NFL team plays 16 games. An NBA team plays 82. And the NHL guys skate down the ice only 80 times. The point is the best of the best are not usually separated until the playoffs in each league. But in baseball, a team plays 162 games. By the season's end, every team has usually had a chance to play their best ball and make a run at the lead. Of course, the motivating factor for this new playoff format is money. It's the same reason that the league expanded the game count from 145 to 162. Dollar signs motivated the expansion of championship series from the best of five to the best of seven. Profits stimulated the creation of expansion teams this season which diluted the talent pool. causing good teams to turn sour. For proof, check out the New York Mets. Beginning in 1994, the league playoffs will have at least 16 more televised games. But, if every se ries goes seven games, there would be 28 more games to increase profits. There is a problem that is a lurking variable in this new format. One division in each league will have four teams compared to five in the other divi sions. Those poor owners will have to add two more expansion teams — surprise, surprise. I bet if Babe Ruth was asked whether one of his second place Yankee teams should go to the play offs, he might spit at the inquisitor. « Cal Ripken, Jr. would probably smirk and pre-! tend no one was there if it was suggested that he should go to the playoffs this year if his team fin ished with the best second place record. Baseball players thrive on one thing, to put out the maximum effort to win. Losing is nothing to be ashamed of, but a good athlete never wants to be rewarded for it. Leave it to the owners to spoil the sanctity of the game.
