A&M center to open in Mexico City By James Bernsen The Battalion In an effort to expand research and business op portunities, Texas A&M University will open a new center in Mexico City on Sept. 16. The center will coordinate the University's activi ties in Mexico, as well as housing offices of the State of Texas. Dr. Gabriel Carranza, director of Texas A&M's Mexican and Latin American Programs Office, was one of the first advocates of the center. "The idea is to have a central location for faculty to continue relations with Mexico," Carranza said. "We are the first university in the U.S. to establish such a presence in Mexico." Carranza said A&M has close to 20 agreements with Mexican institutions for research and education, and wants to establish stronger business ties. Tom Taylor, assistant vice president and con troller, said the center would provide an opportunity to centralize and extend business activities, as well as those of other schools in the A&M System that have initiatives in Mexico. Dr. Emily Ashworth, associate provost for interna tional programs, said the center also will serve as a base for training programs for A&M faculty. "I think the center will provide great opportuni ties, especially for our students," Ashworth said. The center will provide a staging area for study abroad programs, research ventures and services to former students. It is the result of three years of work that culminated in a donation of the office space by Pable and Barbara Marvin. Ashworth said future developments may allow exchanges of A&M instructors and faculty from Mex ican universities. Taylor said establishing a center in a foreign coun try was difficult. "The financial side has been a challenge," he said. "The main difference we had to overcome was our own learning curve." A&M has contracted with a Mexican public ac counting firm to deal with an entire new system of tax laws. Once the center is running, funding will come from colleges within the university who will have ac cess to the center, as well as from the state. Taylor said that with the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the center would assume even greater significance. And, the office of the State of Texas will provide opportunities for businesses in Texas and Mexico to form cooperative agreements. The A&M offices will do the same, using alumni ties, Carranza said. "The idea is to link former students in Mexico with former students here," he said. The center will have a classroom, multimedia room, reception room and an office for former A&M students from Mexico. The opening of the center will be attended by Gov. Ann Richards, Interim Chancellor William Mobley, Interim President E. Dean Gage and mem bers of the A&M Board of Regents, Carranza said. A&M officials have appointed Alejandra Gama, a native of Mexico City, as coordinator of the center.
