In the '70s, city police turned to Frank Serpico. In the '90s, they're turning to A1 Pacino — the guy who played the under cover officer in the movie. The city, home to thousands upon thousands of out-of-work actors and actresses, is consider ing a casting call for anyone inter ested in uncovering rogue cops. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced. The thespians, in character, would work with the police Inter nal Affairs Bureau to expose bad cops — a problem that has gained increasing notoriety as a mayoral commission probes illegal activity in the department. But before they shout lights, cameras, action for this merger of entertainment and enforcement, some actors and actresses are screaming, "Cut!" They far prefer peering over stage lights to look ing up a gun barrel. "I'd have to think twice — maybe three times — before say ing yes," said Nancy Marines, 27, a student at the Actor's Institute. "What if something happens? What do you do then?" Aspiring actor Keith Hutt, 25, of Manhattan, agreed: "This is real danger. Suppose a cop finds out who you are. His life, career and family are in jeopardy. Who knows what he'll do?" Who cares? We're talking work and cash, said Jason Heller, an actor who spent 13 years in Japan making action flicks. Both in the natii ‘Gospels’ Continued from Page 4 It is a great idea with such tal ented singers as Stephanie White, Kristan Kelley and M.A. Sterling, who also is the music director. White, Kelley and Sterling were able to create some great harmony with the songs they sang together. One particular song, "Are We Ready," showed the commanding voice Sterling possesses. The play was created for an all male cast, so many songs were changed for female singers. All the singers and musicians includ ing, Keith Herrmann, Will Mason, Holly Hill, Jami Anderson, Rick Miller, Jeff Gilmore and Jack Bathke compensated and per formed splendidly despite the strenuous change. With the great musical direc tion of Sterling, choreographer Herrmann (who also played Matthew) created some lively dance steps. But, Dinner Theater failed to re alize one major reason for last sum mer's success — the ability of the singers to touch the audience and make them feel a part of the show. That intimacy is lost in "Cotton Patch Gospel." When they would move along the aisles, it took an effort to step down off the stage. In addition, many of the singers were self-conscious about their voices. White held her ex ceptional soprano voice in check. Many times I was looking for ward to hearing her belt out a song like last summer. . Even the set seemed more ap propriate in the forum. Although the design was interesting and fit well with the overall production, the theater made it look small. In the end though, the cast overcame these obstacles smoothly. "Cotton Patch Gospel" could have been another entertaining version of "Smoke on the Moun tain." Sadly, it was only a noble effort by a sensational cast. Several legislators have re quested an attorney general's opinion on the matter and Gov. Ann Richards has asked the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to examine the issue. A letter from Nancy Atlas, chairwoman of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, to the commissioner, orders schools not to implement any financial need provisions until the board can discuss the topic. She said she felt that the provision involves more than just an agency staff car rying out a ministerial function. Atlas said the board needs to consider substantive issues relat ed to the change and noted that the legislators who sponsored the bills and amendments have raised questions as to the original intent of the bill. "What we've done is request that all colleges not implement the amendment this fall," said Ray Grasshoff, a spokesman for the board. "Right now it is on hold," he said. "Nothing is going to affect benefits for this fall." Grasshoff said he thinks there is enough concern among law makers to keep the exemptions throughout the year and possibly beyond. friends when they get close, using outrageous excuses such as, "She was in the mafia," or "She smelled like soup." He then composes derogatory poems about them that he reads aloud in the Roads bar on Kerouac Street. But now he's found the girl of his dreams, Harriet Michaels (Nancy Travis), a beautiful butch er with a mysterious past. Char lie's paranoia surfaces again, how ever, when he reads one of his mother's tabloids. He begins to suspect that Harriet is the devious "Ms. X," who marries, then mur ders her husbands. Mike Myers performs well in the film, both as Charlie and in the bly enjoy "So I Married an Axe Murderer." But be forewarne the soundtrack to this film wil make heavy metal fans hurl. One saccharin pop song, "There She Goes," is played repeatedlj throughout the film. Nancy Travis adds a lot to "So I Married an Axe Murderer.' She has a fine repertoire of facial expressions, and does a great jot opposite her paranoid beau Harriet really seems confused bj the evasions and outright fear Charlie's actions. Okay, so maybe this film isn't Oscar material. Who cares? It hai a few low points, but they're not that bad. "In fact, the military recognizes that gay and lesbians nave always served in superior capacity, in some ways better than heterosex uals," he said. James Burk, associate professor of Sociology, said a study needs to be done on the affects of homo sexuals in the military on their unit's performance. "We have evidence of thou sands of people serving in the mili tary who are homosexual/'he said. Many members of the military say homosexuals will be disrup tive to morale, Burk said. "But this is an empirical claim that hasn't been studied," he said "There is no reason why we can't study the records of homosexual! who have served in the military Who gets to say whether the pres ence of homosexuals in the mili tary is disruptive." Burk said there is no reason this policy should be tested on the entire military until studies have been conducted. But Clinton promised he would lift the ban against gays in the military if he was elected. "Once he got into office, it was apparent he couldn't do that uni laterally," Bond said. Bond said the U.S.'s system of fragmented power prohibits the president from doing something without opposition. 696-8700 Don't Worry when an accident or sudden illness occurs CarePlus is open when you need them 7 days a week with affordable medical care CarePlus^tti Family Medical Center 2411 Texas Ave. and Southwest Pkwy. 693-0683 10% A&M student discount U.S. Israe BEIRl brokere weeklon ern Leba ing for 1 tlireat to Abou been dri the air launchec guerrilla Israeli tn The 1 rael's b; Lebanor rout Yas eration ( At le, and 4 C mosque terfron with ref Belg of h( MOI douin ( failure ing in spokes: The town ft Mediti spokes: of the 1 and his been v, July 22 The ga que Luc D( died al diac ar Kin; health he uni repair i
