HOUSTON — Donovan Osborne earned his fifth victo
ry in six decisions and Gregg Jefferies drove in three runs
Monday to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Houston
Astros 10-4.
St. Louis avoided a four-game sweep and stopped
Houston's four-game winning streak. Osborne (7-3) al
lowed three runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings, relying pri
marily on 13 fly ball outs.
Jefferies went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double.
His 16-game hitting streak was snapped Sunday.
Greg Swindell (6-8) gave up six earned runs and 10 hits
in five innings. Lee Smith retired Ken Caminiti with the
bases loaded to end the game.
St. Louis took a 3-0 lead in the first when Jefferies' 11th
home run drove in Ozzie Smith, who singled. Todd Zeile
followed with a triple and scored on Bernard Gilkey's sin
gle.
The Cardinals increased their lead to 4-0 in the second
on Geronimo Pena's sacrifice fly, but Scott Servais hit a
two-run single in the bottom half.
Run-scoring singles by Erik Pappas and Tom Pagnozzi
made iU6-2 in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Chris James singled
home a run in the seventh, but Ozzie Smith and Jefferies
hit RBI singles in the eighth for an 8-3 lead.
Jeff Bagwell hit his 13th home run in the eighth. Brian
Jordan hit a two-run homer in the ninth, his second home

Gonzalez's two-run
homer lifts Texas
past Milwaukee, 5-4
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
MILWAUKEE — Juan Gonzalez hit a two-run
home run in the eighth inning Monday as Texas
beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 for its third consec
utive victory.
With the score tied 3-3 in the eighth, Rafael
Palmeiro singled with one out off Graeme Lloyd (2-
1), who relieved to start the inning. Gonzalez then
greeted James Austin with his 21st homer, driving a
2-0 pitch over the left-field fence.
The victory was the fourth in five games for the
Rangers, who opened their 11-game road trip by
winning three of four in Detroit.
Milwaukee overcame a 3-0 deficit with single
runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, tying the
score in the sixth on Robin Yount's RBI single off
Todd Burns. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Mike Schooler (3-0) relieved and retired Tom
Brunansky on a popout to shortstop.
Bob Patterson, the sixth Texas pitcher, struck out
the final two batters for his first save of the season.
Texas took a 1-0 lead in the second on a bad-hop
RBI double by Mario Diaz over shortstop Dickie
Thon. The Rangers added two unearned runs in the
fourth after an an error by third baseman B.J.
Surhoff and a wild pitch by Angel Miranda. Butch
Davis followed with an RBI triple and Jon Shave sin
gled home a run.

Hockey

club is open to all forms of inline
skating. Nansh said the focus,
however, is on roller hockey.
"We might change our name,"
Nansh said. "Another club just
started for free-style and we
asked them if they wanted to
make their own division with us.
They wanted their own club,
though."
The inline skate nine-member
competition team recently re
turned to A&M from a tourna
ment in Houston with a first-
place finish. There were six teams
in the division in which the club
competed.
"The team from Sam Houston
State was probably the toughest
team we faced," Nansh said.
Marc Wills, a member of the
competition team, said, "I was im
pressed with the win. We im
proved a lot over our last tourna
ment in Dallas. In Dallas, though,
we only had six players instead of
nine, so we couldn't get any line
changes."
Nansh was also pleased with
the victory. "Hopefully by win
ning some tournaments we will
get some sponsorship," Nansh
said.
One sponsor has already
agreed to support the team. B C S
Bicycle has agreed to give the club
a percentage of its sales of skating
equipment.
At the moment, the competi
tion team is practicing for a na
tional tournament to be held in
Colorado on Sept. 18. The team
will be competing in the Recre
ational Division at the tourna
ment.
The team has stayed relatively
injury free, barring the occasional
scrapes that come from falls.
Checking is not allowed during
competitions.
Aside from the lack of check
ing, the only other difference be
tween roller hockey and ice hock
ey is the length of the game.
"In Houston we only played
with two 12 and a half minute
halves with a five minute break
between," Nansh said. "I would
like to play with at least three 12
and a half minute periods."
