Wednesday, April 28,1993 The Battalion Page 5 Campus Briefs Continued from Page 2 A&M chapter of NAMA tops marketing competition The Texas A&M University Student Chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) won the student marketing competition for 1993. Fifteen students prepared and presented a de tailed marketing plan in competition with teams from 25 universities. The Texas A&M team devel oped their plan for hypothetical pharmaceutical product. Team members were Shannon Davis, Charity Dorman, Robert Harvey, Lesa King, and Jennifer Wilson. Other members include Jeffrey Carter, Scott Dierlam, Brian Markwardt, Todd Merritt, Lisa Milligan, Ashley Odom, Christopher Purifoy, Clarinda Smith, and Jeana Yoakum. Dr. John Nichols and Dr. Charles Hall, faculty members in the Department of Agricultural Eco nomics, are team coaches and advisers. The competition was held April 19-20 in conjunc tion with NAMA Annual Convention in Orlando, Fla. Class project wins contest for marketing students "Take a Look. Make the Choice." was the win ning entry for six Texas A&M University marketing students whose class project was to develop an ad vertising campaign for Subaru. Members of the gold winners team were Mered ith Barron of Arlington, Laska Santino of College Station; Jeffrey Allen of Fort Worth, Kelly Sweeney of Henderson and Marklene Atkins and Debra Champness of Houston. The students' advertising procedures class com peted to create the most effective marketing cam paign to sell the Impreza, Subaru's new subcom pact and sport wagon, to college seniors. Using grant money from Subaru, 12 teams of students from two class sections developed multi dimensional promotional campaigns for the new car. Entries were judged by advertising and writing professionals and Subaru executives. Two silver winner teams also were selected. Architechture undergrads design models for developer Texas A&M University architecture students let their imaginations roam wild across 44 acres of prime real estate which local bank officials hope will attract major investments as part of a class pro ject. The result was eight scaled design models built to project ways the land, which is located adjacent to the Brazos Valley Health Center, could be devel oped. The project was launched three months ago by Donald A. Adam, chairman of the board and chief executive officer at First American Bank. Each model involved a team of two third-year architecture students. The development concepts range from a medical office complex to a historic theme park. Danny Burnett, one of the students involved in the project, said he learned more than architecture from the project. "The biggest thing that I learned from this expe rience was how to get people to agree on some thing," Burnett said. "Everybody's ideas are right. We just had to find the best right." Crime Stoppers Stereo thieves sought in burglary Some time on either Thursday, April 8 or Friday, April 9, be tween 3 p.m. and 9 a.m., the Fel lowship Baptist Church, located at 1228 West Villa Maria Road in Bryan, was burglarized. Gunmen free one justice Officials believe kidnappers want release of cartel members THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Gunmen who stormed the Supreme Court and seized 19 magistrates freed one Tuesday, but another hostage told a reporter that the assailants had wired their captives with explo sives. Costa Rican and Columbian officials speculated that the kidnappers who stormed the building Mon day belong to Colombia's Medellin cocaine cartel and are seeking release of four cartel members ar rested in September. The four gunmen, who called themselves ''The Commando of Death," seized 19 of the 22 justices and five assistants. Officials say they also are de manding $20 million and safe conduct to a South American country. A magistrate identified as Jesus Ramirez walked out of the main entrance shortly before midday as dozens of heavily armed police with assault rifles stood by. He was helped into a police vehicle and taken to a hospital. A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Ramirez was suffering from heart problems. There was no immediate report on his condition. Greivin Moya, a journalist with Channel 7 televi sion, spoke for 15 minutes with Chief Justice Edgar Cervantes on the negotiators' open line. He said Cervantes sounded shaken when he re ported that some hostages had been wired with ex plosives. Cervantes also said explosives were placed in the building. Cervantes said the situation was "extremely criti cal," and that the gunmen would allow no other hostages to go free until their demands were met, even if some fell ill, Moya reported. The gunmen and hostages apparently remained Tuesday on the second floor of the four-story build ing. Authorities have granted the kidnappers' requests that telephone, power and water not be cut off, and gave them a radio and a television set. Four Columbians were arrested in September dur ing a worldwide crackdown on cocaine traffickers. More than 100 suspects were arrested in Italy, the United States, Britain, Canada and Costa Rica, and about 1,100 pounds of cocaine was seized. Pressed about a possible Medellin connection to the gunmen. Foreign Minister Bernd Niehaus said late Monday: "It's obvious they are foreigners." He refused to elaborate.
