THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON — A two-week symposium on sexual taboos is not tne usual academic fare spon sored by Rice University. But some academics say the time for gender studies has come, and a peep at sexual roles and practices is needed. "A Symposium on Perver sions," Rice s cross-cultural look at abnormal gender behavior and taboo sexual practices was wind ing up Monday night with panels discussing everything from the Texas sodomy law to transvestites and transsexuals. Critics say such events are ex amples of political correctness gone amuck. But organizers say the sympo sium subject reflects a changing society, one that made a movie like '’The Crying Game," an overnight sensation. "It's important for people to understand their assumptions rather than simply take them for granted," said Colleen Lamos, a Rice assistant professor of English and creator of the symposium. 1 want to show the cultural relativi ty and plurality of what's beet called perversion throughout hi} tory." Among some of the topics db cugsed ^ere Andy Warhol's sexu ality and the dominant-submis sive roles irrlesbian relationships Rice isw'-Mhe first Houston-aisi school to focus on gender roles, The University of Houston, fc instance, this year became Texas first school to offer a class ot gays: discrimination law and sex ual orientation. Se/ea fee option 16 Only $25, plus tax Chemical plant defumes repugnant odors THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BORGER — Noses that catch a whiff from Phillips Petroleum Co.'s chemical plant these days aren't suf fering too badly. Thanks to a new loading system, fugitive fumes are being deodorized in a high-tech bath that scrubs the air particles before shooting them outside. The $2 million "mercaptan dock odor, control scrubber system" reduces by 97.5 percent the foul smelling compounds that used to escape, said Phillips process engineer Todd Vollick. "It's a big improvement to our workers and our community,' said Pete Stynes, operations manager at the Philtex Plant of Phillips' Borger complex. "We did this just because we want to reduce the odors. We're not required by law." Philtex workers make and load mercaptans, which are synthesized versions of natural stinks like garlic, onion and skunk spray. Philtex ships themer captans to companies around the world that injecl the products as a safety measure into natural gas, which has no odor. Philtex's old loading method allowed some stink) fumes to escape around the nozzles that fit into® ventional 55-gallon drums. But since January, the loading has taken place in side closed booths that suck up escaping fumes into a scrubber. Inside the scrubber, blowers shoot the fumes through pipes, up a stack and into a bleach solution A chemical reaction occurs between the bleach and the mercaptans, deodorizing the air, Vollick said. The heavy, oily residue left behind is sent to Phillips' refinery, he said. Take part in a Texas A&M tradition!
