Top-ranked Aggies take two from BU By WILLIAM HARRISON Return home turns out to be trip into past I 'd like to thank Major League Base ball for helping me enjoy my weekend. It wasn't an awe some play or a monster home run that did it. It wasn't the Dodgers mak ing their 30th error, Barry Bonds striking out, or the al most naked Ex pos fans run ning onto the Olympic Stadium field even though they did make me laugh out loud. I owe baseball my appreciation because it allowed my father and I to talk to each for the first time in ages. Every time I go home I rarely see my parents except when I'm leaving to come back, because we live on different schedules. They get up early and go to bed early, I stay out late and sleep until noon. Even when we're all awake at the same time I'm usually out with friends or playing the Sega game they wouldn't let me take to college. For some reason, though, this weekend was different. With Mom away on a business trip, there was nothing there to dis turb us from our favorite pastime - watching TV. We could have cared less who won the Reds-Mets game, but for some reason it turned into one of the most entertaining games I'd ever seen. It was a learning mo ment. When CBS announcer Tim Mc- See Winder/Page 8 By MATTHEW J. RUSH The Battalion After a non-conference break in the schedule during the past week, Texas A&M resumed Southwest Conference play against Baylor on April 16. The out come of an important series this weekend saw the Aggies take two from the Bears on Parent's Weekend. The first game, played at Waco, saw a pitcher's duel between A&M's Trey Moore and Baylor's Aaron Lineweaver. The game ended in the ninth as a Baylor error eventually led to the game's only run. Moore turned in a five-hit masterpiece as he notched his tenth victory and the Aggies improved their record to 9-1 in the conference. The next two games were played at Olsen Field in front of a record crowd of 6,486. Pitcher Jeff Granger, who was scratched from his start Friday with a stomach virus, started against the Bears and pitched a four-hitter, only to come out on the losing end of a 2-1 score. Granger pitched seven innings, strik ing out eight Bears, but the A&M bats re mained silent for the second consecutive game, with the team collecting only six hits and one run. The lone run came on a line-drive home run by third baseman Lee Fedora. The bats were still inactive and frustra tion began to build as the game reached the bottom of the fifth. Fedora and first baseman John Curl quickly ended the si lence as they both got key hits in a six-run fifth inning, both coming with two outs. After leaving men on base in four of the first five innings, Fedora stepped up and knocked an opposite field shot into right, scoring Brian Thomas for the tying run. With two men on. Curl laced a dou ble to left centerfield, plating both Fedora and Trey Moore. "Anybody on the team can spark a ral ly," said Fedora of his hit. "I'm just happy to be a part of it." Fedora ended up three for seven with a homer and three runs batted in for the two games at home against Baylor. "We were like a big storm," said Curl, who had what ended up as the game winning hit. Curl hit a robust .556 for the three- game series as he went five for nine with the big double and two giant runs batted in. The Battalion Before an Olsen Field record crowd of 6,486, Texas A&M split Saturday's dou ble-header with Baylor 1-2 ana 9-2 to take two games out of three and remain in the top spot of the Southwest Confer ence at 40-6 overall, 10-2 in the SWC. A&M, ranked number one in the na tion, holds a one-game lead over the Uni versity of Texas in the Southwest Confer ence standings after the Longhorns swept Rice this weekend in three games at the Owls' Cameron Field. A&M coach Mark Johnson said he wasn't sure that the team would come through in the second game of Satur day's double-header after the team suf fered through a dry-hitting spell that lasted from A&M's game on Friday until a six-run, fifth-inning outburst in Satur day's nightcap. See Bears/Page 8 A&M coach Mark Johnson was also proud of his two sophomores. "We had some big hits that inning, and the energy is contagious," said Johnson. "Both of them had big hits. "The two-out rally was a breath of fresh air for us offensively." In addition to the explosion of offense in the third game, pitcher Kelly Wunsch added a five-hit gem to continue his hot streak of pitching this year. Wunsch raised his record to 6-0 as he fanned twelve Bears, including the last six he faced. During the game, Wunsch was confi dent that the Aggies would not remain cold at the plate. "I just had a feeling we would ex plode," said Wunsch.
