Bob Krueger called Monday for his challengers to join him in cut ting their own salaries and office budgets. Krueger, the Democrat ap pointed to replace Lloyd Bentsen until a special election is held, said he is returning 20 percent of his salary and office budget. He also has eliminated mail ings of newsletters at taxpayer ex pense. In an interview, Krueger said three GOP challengers who hold public office should match his ac tion. challenge my opponents to show that they are serious about cutting waste, and start at home with their own salaries. T say that when it comes to cutting govern ment spending, politicians should lead by example and start with themselves/' Krueger said. "Charity may begin at home. But if charity begins at home, they're giving it all to themselves and not giving any to the taxpay ers who put them there," he said. A spokesman for one GOP can didate, U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-En- nis, said Barton last year returned 14 percent of his congressional budget. "Krueger's just come onto this idea. He has no genuine interest in the subject," said Barton spokesman Craig Murphy. The campaign of a second Re publican, state Treasurer Kay Bai ley Hutchison, said she has pro posed a congressional reform plan that would require Congress to cut its budget and staff by 25 per cent and forego cost of living rais es until the federal budget is bal anced. "Instead of this election eve showboating, Mr. Krueger would he well advised to concentrate on real deficit reduction matters," said David Beckwith, a spokesman for Hutchison. Both GOP spokesmen also not ed that Krueger, as a congressman in the 1970s, voted for newsletter mailings. Krueger said eliminating newsletter mailings from his Sen ate office will save taxpayers $500,000 this year. "If they are serious about cut ting waste, then it's time to set an example or at least follow a decent lead," Krueger said. "Cutting waste means digging in and making personal sacrifices expenses first and doing the hard work to find waste and rout it out. Are the people running in this race willing to put their money where their mouth is?" he asked. Twenty-four candidates have entered the May 1 special election race. Balloting begins April 12. If no candidate wins more than 50 per cent of that vote, a runoff between the top two finishers will be held. In other campaign develop ments Monday: — The state's other U.S. sena tor, Republican Phil Gramm, pre dicted that the special election will lead to a runoff, with a Re publican ultimately winning. But he wouldn't say which Re publican that might be. — U.S. Rep. Jack Fields, R- Humble, picked up the endorse ment of former congressman Beau Boulter of Amarillo, who said it is "important that we Republicans unite behind the candidate who can most effectively challenge Bob Krueger and Bill Clinton." — Hutchison told a Dallas fund-raising event she will be an advocate for women's rights. "As senator. I'll fight to ensure that women have equal opportunity in all aspects of American life." ilk RESEARCH Urinary Tract Infection Study • Lower Back Pain • Painful Urination 1 Frequent urination ’Fever VIP Research is seeking individuals 12 years of age or older with complicated urinary tract infections.
