Cypress Creek High School students Angie Zullo, 16, and Katie Moehring, 17, still are suf fering symptoms after ingesting strychnine on Nov. 17 during a basketball game at Kempner High School in Fort Bend County. On Friday, the girls' mothers questioned why school officials did not immediately take the girls to the hospital after they started suffering from muscle cramps. "I don't question my judgment then, or now," Betty Maaskant, who has been coaching for 11 years at Cypress Creek High, said Saturday. "I was dealing with muscle cramps at the time and I followed the correct procedure." Maaskant said Moehring start ed having mild muscle cramps shortly after the game. Two other girls, including Zullo, began hav ing pain in their legs during the trip home. Maaskant said she stopped to buy Gatorade, and checked heart beats and breathing throughout the trip home. She also said she stopped the team van and tried to relieve Zullo's pain by stretching her out on the side of the road. "Cramping isn't that unusual among athletes after a game," Maaskant said. "It was unusual to have that many athletes with cramps at the same time." A jury of four men and one woman, all Air Force colonels, de liberated about two hours before returning guilty verdicts on all counts against Col. James Maxwell. He was convicted of transmit ting obscene material via home computer, transmitting child pornography through his comput er and using indecent language with a junior Air Force officer. Maxwell, a 26-year Air Force veteran, now faces a possible 16- year prison sentence and loss of his military retirement benefits. Charges were filed against Maxwell after the FBI found his name among users of an on-line CompLttef network who accessed computer-generated phonograph ic images of children. Maxwell also was said to have used the computer network to in quire about the location of homo sexual meeting places. Maxwell's attorney had sought to have the charges dropped on grounds his transmissions on the computer from the privacy of his home were protected under the constitution. But the trial judge. Col. Donald Weir of Randolph Air Force Base, allowed the charges to stand last week, ruling khat freedom of speech can be limited when it in volves conduct unbecoming an of ficer. "That the writings were private between consenting adults, that they may have been welcome doesn't place them under the judi cial umbrella of a constitutional protected condition," Weir had ruled. Weir dismissed a count alleg ing Maxwell had disgraced the Air Force by allegedly using elec tronic mail to ask about homosex ual bars and child pornography. Maxwell, 48, was removed from command at the Goodfellow Air Force Base training center last summer after the charges were filed. Defense attorneys argued Maxwell's privacy was violated when the FBI in December 1991 began searching the electronic! mail'sent by 88 usdrs of America ' Online Inc. Tic America Online had alerted the FBI when one user sent a compa ny executive some samples of sex ually explicit messages. Maxwell's user name, "Red- del" was among those listed as a receiver on a pornography sam ple, the prosecution said. Weir likened the electronic transmissions to mass bulk mail sendings, saying they enjoy no privacy protection.
