TOURS & TRAVEL something you can build off. "Secondly, we have got to play smart basketball, because we are not a team that can blowout people. That is not our style." Johnson said that thinking about TCU only will be a key. "We have to come out focused and execute our offense, and play tough defense," he said. "We. have to do that because TCU is in a slump just like we are, so we need to be prepared for their best effort." BOSTON — The word "cham pionship" flowed repeatedly from Bill Parcells' lips as he returned to coaching Thursday, even if he must rebuild the New England Patriots team. Parcells, winner of two Super Bowls in his last five years as head coach of the New York Gi ants, takes charge of a team that tied for the NFL's worst record and has won just four playoff games in its 33-year history. "History," he declared, "means nothing in football." With Massachusetts Gov. William Weld looking on, Parcells was introduced in a chandeliered conference room of a fancy down town hotel. Patriots owner Jim Orthwein called the signing of Parcells "the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in the history of the New England Patriots." At a meeting late last week, he said, Orthwein asked him what it would take to make the Patriots competitive. "I told him I wasn't interested in a competitive team, but rather if he was interested in bringing a championship team to New Eng land, then I was his man," Par- cells said at a news conference. "That's the only goal a guy like me can have. "I emphasize the word cham pionship because that's what I'm trying to do," he added. "When (Orthwein) said, 'That's what I want to do, too,' I got real inter ested." Details of Parcells' multiyear contract were not released but he said, "this is my last coaching job, without question." Patriots officials also inter-:; viewed former coaches Buddy Ryan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Mike Ditka of the Chicago Bears. 1055 Texas Ave. C.S. But no deals could be reached, so he was forced to start the season for a team he did not want to play on. Would he carry a grudge onto the court? Would he be less motivated? Would he be such a problem that he would force the Rockets to trade him? All those questions were an swered when he became the most consistent player in the league this year. If he played in Los Angeles, he would have al ready been on the cover of Sports Illustrated twice. After all that, he is still the Rockets go-to guy, even though he is mostly double and triple- teamed every night. He is the defensive stopper and a player who leads by emotion and exam ple. He has learned to keep him self out of foul trouble because he knows there is no capable backup on the bench. Hakeem Olajuwon is the heart and soul of the Rockets. Without him they would have a tough time beating the Dallas Mavericks. The last ten MVP awards have been given to players who have played in the bigger televi sion markets. It should not mat ter where a players plays to win an individual award, but sadly, that is what the MVP is all about. Because he plays in Houston, Hakeem will probably have to settle for a fourth-place finish £V * BOUT AG Oi^ our at MSC OPEN HOUSE K Saturday, January 30, 1993 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. More than 150 organizations represented, entertainment, door prizes.
