Two Aggies offer students different kind of bookstore By JULI PHILLIPS Reporter of THE BATTALION Tired of the high textbook prices and selling them back for comparatively small amounts, two Texas A&M students have opened a business to offer stu dents an alternative to the book stores. Neal Kirk, a senior computer science major from San Antonio, and Tim Hall, a junior geogra phy major from Dallas, have named their business "The Book Match." The inspiration for the busi ness came when he saw a flier asking $35 for a book he had just purchased for $70, Kirk said. "I hardly had any money, so when I saw that, I was really mad," Kirk said. "Then I began to think that I should sell my own books, and then I thought, 'Hey, I can sell everybody's books.'" Right now, high book prices and low return at the end of the semester is the status quo. Hall said. Although Kirk and Hall will be taking a percentage of the profits (20 percent or $5, whichever is the lesser amount), the pair says this system'will still save everyone a lot of mon ey. "That's the status quo, but we want to change it and make this RICHARD S. IAMES/The Battalion Neal Kirk and Tim Hall operate a book locating service to help students find people who are selling the books they want to buy. the status quo," Hall said. "We want to save everyone a ton of money and stop the rip off." "The Book Match" works through a data base and net works people who want to sell books with people who want to buy books. Students can name their selling and buying prices. "It's a free market enter prise," Kirk said. "The books that are priced cheaper are the first books bought." To use the service, students call Kirk and Hall and give them the title, author, edition of the book to be sold or bought, the class for which it was or will be used, the approximate price at which they would like to sell or buy the book, and their name and phone number. No handling of books is nec essary until a match is made, and even then "The Book Match" offers free pickup and delivery. "The Book Match" is ready for fall books and spring orders and will be open during Christmas.
