He must have. How else could you ex plain the strange, twisted events that oc curred on gridirons all across Ameri ca? Maybe now that the elec tion is over, the Big Man Up stairs had more time to spend on his favorite pastime. If there was ever a time for divine intervention to take place, God picked no better time than Saturday. He started in Kyle Field by bless ing Texas A&M's offense. The Aggies had, by far and away, their best offen sive production of the year in their 40- 18 victory over Louisville. As a result, the Aggies looked more like the fifth-best team in the country than they have all year long. And God saw that it was good. Everything clicked. There were no lapses, no lulls, and no mistakes. A&M executed as a team better than it has all season. In watching the game, you started to get the sense that this team has come together and now is ready for the stretch run that awaits. Part of that is due to a heaven-sent reincarnation at quarterback. Bucky Richardson came back to A&M Satur day in the form of Corey Pullig. But it took the entire first half for the A&M defense to solve the riddle of Louisville's surprising offen sive scheme in the Aggies' 40-18 home win. Although Louisville head coach Howard Schnellenberger entered the game not knowing whether his defense would be facing Jeff Granger or Corey Pullig under center, he threw the A&M defense a curve of his own, as his run ning backs had 22 carries for 132 yards and one touchdown in the first half. And the fact that Anthony Shelman, a backup tailback, accounted for 92 of those yards on 12 carries emphasizes the departure from Louisville's passing-oriented scheme. Like so many other times this season, the A&M coaching staff was forced to make major adjustments at halftime. For defensive coordinator Bob Davie, the ad justment had to be coming up with a way to stop Louisville's draws and misdirec tion plays without linebacker Larry Jack- son, who was on the sideline with a bro ken hand. Clearly, whatever Davie said, the "Wrecking Crew" took it to heart. The Cardinals had no positive yardage in the third quarter, and gained only 43 yards on the ground in the final period. Davie took his defense's first half in stride, saying that it was merely typical of how this season has progressed. "It seems like all year we've gotten off to a rocky start," Davie said.
