Ship collides with
Greenpeace boat
tracking freighter
carrying plutonium
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PARIS — A Japanese escort ship
collided Sunday with a Green
peace boat tracking a freighter
laden with highly toxic plutoni
um, the Greenpeace crew said.
Japan is shipping the plutoni
um home to fire up a new genera
tion of nuclear fast-breeder reac
tors. Greenpeace opposes the
shipment and is tracking it, saying
the plutonium poses huge dan
gers ranging from a spill to an at
tack by terrorists seeking nuclear
bomb-making material.
The freighter Akatsuki Maru,
carrying 1.7 tons of plutonium,
slipped out of the French port of
Cherbourg late Saturday after a
day of violent clashes between se
curity forces and environmental
ists.
The vessel's route on its two-
month voyage to Yokohama is se
cret. But Greenpeace said the
freighter and its armed escort, a
Japanese warship, were sailing
southwest in the Atlantic and
could reach Portugal's Azores Is
lands by Wednesday.
The sideswipe collision in the
English Channel damaged the he
licopter landing decks of the war
ship Shikishima and the Green
peace boat Solo, the group said
There were no reported injuries.
A speck of plutonium inhaled
can kill a human. It is also the key
ingredient in nuclear weapons
Though France insists the ship
ment is not weapons quality,
Greenpeace says it could be used
to make 120 crude bombs.
