Page 6 The Battalion Wednesday, November 4,1992 / Continued from Page 1 The campaign of both candi dates pulled out all the stops in the last few weeks of the race, with both sides sometimes hitting below the belt. But Riggs said, for his part, he had no hard feelings. "I'm not the kind of person that holds grudges," Riggs said. "I could sit down and talk with any one about a smooth transition and I hope Sheriff Miller feels the same way." Riggs said the people of Brazos County sent a message to him by electing him. "I think people have shown that they believe we want to restore honesty and integrity to the office of sheriff," Riggs said. "I believe that they have expressed tonight that they believe we are the sheriff Brazos County needs the next four years." John Delaney won his bid for re-election to the 272nd judicial district bench, but was disap pointed in the results from the Memorial Student Center polling station. Delaney said he lost the box to Republican John E. Hawtrey by a little over five votes. He said he wasn't sure whether he lost the box to straight ticket Republican voting, or because of a Republican majority at that polling station. "If it was the former, it indicates to me there are some people who believe party is more important than people . . . party is more im portant than quality . . . party is more important than compe tence," Delaney said. "If it was the latter, it indicates some people are willing to make certain as sumptions based on party labels without troubling themselves to investigate." Delaney said either way, he thought students didn't appreci ate the power they held in their hands. "It's still distressing to know that your entire career could be wiped out by the sleeping giant of I the student vote, based on party I labels," he said. "I urge students to please... please be careful and inform your self of local races." Vednesc College Continued from Page 1 said. "Just the mystic (belief) of De mocrats being against business will have an effect on the stock market and the bond market," Ehlen said. Scott Poole, a Memorial Student Center election judge, said that if the economy was in better shape. Bush might have fared better. "This year, a vote for Clinton was a vote against Bush," Poole said. "The president does not have control over the economy of the country," Poole said. "Bush had the misfortune of the economy be ing in a natural decline. "But we still have our beliefs, we still have our values. Just be cause we have lost the election, we have not lost the battle. The Republican's beliefs are not dead, people are just looking for politi cal change, but it may not provide a better economy." Smith agreed. "Our members work for the Republican platform. The main focus of College Repub licans is to focus on what we be lieve in and make it known, such as traditional values and family values." "This has made me feel better about anything in this country since I was in the (military) ser vice." Even though the presidential election is over, Kaatz said the fight to improve the economy is not over for members of both the Independent and Republican Par ties. "It will take all of us to work to gether to fix (the economy)," he said. "Perot showed that the country is very concerned about the economy and the deficit. That was the message Perot aimed, and it fell on sympathetic ears." Perot supporters never really had their hearts set on actually winning the election after returns began coming in. "I wish Perot would get 25 per cent of the vote, so he would show the pollsters they were wrong and so he'd get a big third place, ,y said Mark Boettcher, a graduate stu dent in land economics. "I was thinking that if Clinton wins he could appoint Perot to a 'blue rib bon committee' on the economy." Raatz said the country was ready for some kind of change and looked to the Independents and Democrats. "Clinton was just more identifi able for the American people in the context of politics." Lou Zaeske, chairman of the In dependent Texan Network, said things must change in national politics for Clinton to be able to make a real difference. "If it becomes a case of party bashing I think that Clinton will be in a great deal of difficulty,’ Zaeske said. "But Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar and I think he is smarter than that. He said the country needs to work together and I think he's right." In his concession speech, Perol commended the American people for supporting him and said that the real challenge lies ahead. "We will continue to work to gether in the future," he said. "The American people have spo ken and the only way to make it all work is for all of us to team up together. The election is behind us and the work is in front of us." WASH idministi ule rest! amily pi ieling pa ederal a day.
